YORK VILLAGE - Award-winning artist Richard Lethem will exhibit his paintings at the York Public Library from June 5 through Aug. 1 in a show entitled "This Shape We're In."

A Berwick resident, Lethem has shown his work both locally and throughout the United States, and his paintings are part of many public and private collections. He currently teaches at the University of Southern Maine.

Lethem's artist's statement begins with the question, "What is there to paint?" and continues with his thoughts about his subjects: "People, people in movement, people with their animals, people inhabiting animals, people inside their heads ... vulnerable people in love and in fear. Exploring the inner workings of the human condition is what I try to do in my painting through an interior dialog between the feeling eye and the submerged consciousness."

The title of the exhibit borrows the title of a book by his son, Jonathan Lethem.

Join Lethem for an artist talk and reception on June 7 at 5 p.m. at the York Public Library. For more information call 363-2818.
