York Public Library to host Cuban literature series

YORK VILLAGE - "So Near and So Far: Cuba through its Literature" is a five-part reading and discussion series that begins on Thursday, June 28, at the York Public Library.

Sponsored by the Library and funded by a grant from the Maine Humanities Council, the series explores the history, romance, political turmoil, spirit and cultural riches of Cuba through scholar-led discussions of the country's literature.

This free series is open to all adults in the community and will be led by historian Jeffrey B. Aronson. In the past 20 years, Aronson has led over 1,000 discussion programs in colleges, libraries, adult education centers and historical societies throughout New England.

The first program on June 28 will explore the book "Biography of a Runaway Slave" by Miguel Barnet. Additional books to be discussed over the summer are "In the Cold of the Malecon," short stories by Antonio Jose Ponte on July 12; "The Chase" by Alejo Carpentier on July 28; "Dreaming in Cuban" by Cristina Garcia on Aug. 9, and "Havana Red" by Leonardo Padura on Aug. 23.

All programs are at 1 p.m. Books will be provided free of charge to participants.

The York Public Library presents this program as part of its commitment to foster the understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity. Registration is required and space is limited.
