Don't be clueless this summer
By Kathleen Whalin
Children’s Librarian
School may soon be out for the summer, but the library needs your keen, reasoning brains! It's time to turn your thoughts to the library's summer reading program, "Get a Clue @ Your Library." The summer reading program begins June 26, with sign-ups beginning June 19. Be sure to register to earn weekly coupons, track down YPL's "cat burglar," and learn about all sorts of library programs. Registration is easy - come in, pick up your summer reading materials, and plan to keep track of how many minutes you read each day.
Summer Reading Events
Weekly challenge: Where is Sherlock? Just when we were all set to offer you great suggestions for good mysteries to read, a cat burglar came and stole a number of our best books. How do we know? The empty tuna cans gave us our first clue! We hired an ace detective, Sherlock Bones, and he's hot on the cat's trail (tail?). Come by each week, examine the clues and guess where Sherlock has been digging up evidence. The weekly winner in our drawing will be photographed with Sherlock and receive a small prize.
Wednesday Morning Movie Mysteries begin at 10:30 a.m., starting June 27 with "The Great Muppet Caper" (rated G, 98 minutes); July 11, "Harriet the Spy" (rated PG, 102 minutes); July 25, "The Great Mouse Detective" (rated G, 74 minutes); Aug. 1 "Escape to Witch Mountain" (rated G, 97 minutes), Aug. 8, "The Secret of Roan Inish"(rated PG, 102 minutes); Aug. 15, "The Secret Garden" (rated G, 102 minutes) and Aug. 22, "Hoodwinked" (rated PG, 81 minutes).
Family Fun Series
We have three special Thursday morning programs scheduled this summer, cosponsored by the York Public Library, Kennebunk Savings Bank and York Recreation Department. Each performance begins at 10:30 a.m., and is appropriate for all ages.
On Thursday, June 28, the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers will join us with "Everybody Loves Pirates." This nationally-known puppetry troupe from Bar Harbor will sail into York Harbor. Lucy and Little Chucky discover a treasure map that a group of pirates is very interested in as well...
On Thursday, July 12, Jan Zimmermann, musician and storyteller, who has been enchanting audiences up and down the Maine coast, will bring tales of mystery to the library.
On Thursday, Aug. 9, Dennis Labbe, a practicing magician since the age of 7, will present an exciting and magical experience for children and families.
On Thursday, July 19, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., begin the bittersweet celebration of the last Harry Potter book two days early! Join York's "Party Mom" Juanita Reed for a program that will test your knowledge of Potter-dom and your status as a Muggle - or not. This party will be limited to 20 participants and pre-registration is required. We ask that kids who have attended previous Harry Potter parties let other children have a chance to register first.
"Good Nights" bedtime stories will be on Wednesday evenings in August from 7 to 7:30 p.m., and children can come to the library in pajamas for quiet stories on summer nights.
Ongoing Programs
Our lap-sit programs for the youngest library patrons will continue weekly during the summer. Check with the library 363-2818 for days and times.
Join us each Friday at 10:30 a.m., June through August, for stories, songs and crafts during Preschool story hours with Miss Kathleen.
Plan to make the York Public Library part of your summer - it's no mystery that we're here to serve you!
