Dorothy Jones

YORK HARBOR - Dorothy P. Jones, 87, of Sentry Hill at York Harbor and Moody Beach, Wells, died peacefully, Sunday, May 27, 2007.

She was born Dorothy Laura Perry on Feb. 28, 1920, in Nashua, N.H., the only daughter of Lloyd M. and Laura (Holden) Perry.

Dot graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1942. She completed nurses' training at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and worked briefly as a private duty nurse with a specialty in operating room nursing.

In 1943 she married Warren H. Jones of Lakeport, N.H. Following the end of World War II the couple lived for four years in Winston-Salem, N.C., while Mr. Jones attended medical school at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, part of Wake-Forest University.

In 1950 the couple moved to Rochester, N.Y., eventually settling in West Irondequoit to raise their growing family.

In 1983 Dot and Warren moved to Portsmouth, N.H., where they lived for 20 years in active retirement.

In 2002 the couple moved to Sentry Hill at York Harbor. Her husband of 63 years died there in July of 2002.

Throughout her life Dot engaged in thousands of hours of volunteer work. She managed numerous blood-mobile drives for the American Red Cross, was a founding member of the New York State Conservative Party and most recently participated in the elementary school reading program in York.

She is survived by two brothers, Robert Perry and Richard Perry, both of Florida, and five children, Warren P. Jones of Brooklyn, Conn., Martha H. Jones of Wells, Dorothy L. Jones of Rensselaer, N.Y., Cynthia Hager of Brighton, Colo., and Randy P. Jones of North Berwick. She also leaves seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. A private memorial service will be held by the family at her summer home on Moody Beach. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York, is directing arrangements.
