OGUNQUIT - For Ogunquit Performing Arts, thirteen is a lucky number as the Chamber Music Festival continues for the 13th year in an expanded mode.
In addition to the familiar groups, like the Boston Chamber Music Society and the DaPonte String Quartet, OPA will this year welcome John Eaken back in a special duo performance with pianist Gloria Whitney and bring the Cicada Chamber Players to Ogunquit for the first time.
In keeping with its tradition of bringing new elements and dimensions to the Ogunquit Chamber Music Festival, OPA is introducing the Cicada Chamber Players, organized by bassist William Blossom who has been a performer in the New York Philharmonic and a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Milwaukee Symphony. The Cicada Chamber Players with Blossom, bass; Meredith Crawford, viola, and Steuart Pincombe, cello, will be performing a program of music by von Dittersdorf, Rossini, Beethoven, Piston and Michael Haydn.
John Eaken of the Eaken Piano Trio will be returning, this year in a special not-to-be-missed duo performance with pianist Gloria Whitney to lead off the festival, followed by the Boston Chamber Music Society, featuring Thomas Hill, clarinet, and Randall Hodgkinson, piano, with guest performer cellist Myles Jordan of DaPonte String Quartet fame.
On Saturday, June 9, the DaPonte String Quartet returns by popular demand with the addition of harpist Jara Goodrich who will be performing with the group in a piece by Gia Comolli, composed specially for the DaPonte String Quartet and harp.
The festival will close with a Sunday early evening performance at 5 p.m. by the Cicada Chamber Players, their first appearance in Ogunquit.
"Ogunquit Performing Arts is proud not only with the quality of music that it brings to Ogunquit, but also with its ability to connect performers and have a cross germination of musicians among groups to heighten and enhance the quality and excitement of the performances," Stuart Nudelman said in announcement of this annual event. "Chamber music is perhaps the most intimate of musical activities and it is greatly appreciated by both the musicians and the audience that these performances take place in the elegant surroundings of the picture-perfect, acoustically-superb, and recently-renovated Barn Gallery in Ogunquit."
Tickets are $14 advance, $16 at the door, $12 senior and free for students 18 and under, and $40 for the series of four performances.
Tickets are available at the Dunaway Center, the Ogunquit Camera Shop and the Ogunquit Welcome Center.
The Barn Gallery is located on Bourne Lane at Shore Road and parking is free. Concerts begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, June 7 through 9, and at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 10.
