Softball teams square off in busy Little League season
YORK - It was a big weekend for major league softball and also a busy week in general for local Little League teams.
Major League Softball, June 1: Angels 16 - Red Sox 5
The Red Sox and Angels squared off twice this weekend, with the Angels taking Friday's game 16-5 over the Red Sox.
Kendall Carr pitched three strong innings for the Red Sox, striking out four batters.
The Angels' offense, led by Nicole Heroux's three singles, Gabrielle Benoit's double, and strong base-running by the Angels, took off in the fourth inning and never looked back.
For the Red Sox, both Colleen Keenan and Ivy Sheehan had two-run triples early in the game.
However, solid pitching by Lisa King, with three strikeouts, and great defense by Angels' shortstop Rebecca Siegel helped to hold the Red Sox through the final innings.
Major League Softball, June 2: Red Sox 13 - Angels 10
In Saturday's rematch between the Red Sox and the Angels, the Red Sox offense came alive and they defeated the Angels 13-10.
Jessie Foggarty started for the Red Sox, striking out three and holding the Angels to only four runs through three innings.
Gabrielle Benoit pitched well for the Angels and led their offense with a triple, three runs scored. Sarah Tewksbury and Nicole Heroux had two singles, and Lisa King doubled for the Angels.
For the Red Sox, Ivy Sheehan had two doubles, Colleen Keenan had one double, and Jennie McPhail and Kendall Carr each had two singles. Two double-plays were made in the game, the first by Angels' second baseman Keyana Reid and the second by the Red Sox's Marquis MacGlashing and Catherine Boner.
Major League Baseball, June 2: Phillies 14 - Nationals 1
The Phillies came alive with hits to drive to a 14 -1 win over the Nationals at Smith Field.
Nationals pitching struggled throughout the game and in the second inning the Phillies bats were hot, as was James McCafferty through the game on the mound. For the Phillies, Jackson Mitchell, Mitchell Lee, Sean McKenna and McCafferty each had a double and a single, and Trevor Mallett also had a hit.
For the Nationals, the only run was on a solo homer by Donald Goodrich over the center field fence, while Bailey McKenna, Mitchell Benoit and Tanner Robinson all had a hit.
Major League Baseball, June 2: Astros 9 - Marlins 1
The Astros beat the Marlins 9-1 Saturday afternoon behind the strong pitching of Alex Mercurio and three hits by Michael Gallagher along with a two-run homer by Aaron Todd.
The Marlins were led in hitting by Conor Tully (2 hits). Kyle Cone, Zach Leal and Michael Kahn each had a hit for the Marlins. Defensively for the Marlins in the first inning Dalton Lorenson made a great running catch at the wall in right field.
The Astros also had hits by Evan McElwain and Josh Donohoe. Donohoe also had three RBI's on the day.
Major League Baseball, June 1: Astros 5 - A's 0
The Astros beat the A's 5-0 Friday night behind the no-hit pitching of Aaron Todd and a three-run homerun by Alex Mercurio. Todd recorded 13 strikeouts in four and one-third innings while Mercurio collected four RBIs.
For the A's , Nick Goulette had the only hit while Trenton Spencer was the only player not to strikeout as he reached first base all three times up.
Major League Baseball, June 1: Twins 4 - Nationals 2
A pitching duel between Adam Bailey of the Twins and Mitchell Benoit of the Nationals - each with nine strikeouts - resulted in a 4-2 win over the Nationals last Friday night.
For the Twins, Bailey had a triple, Ben Lawlor went three for three with two singles as well as the double that drove in the two winning runs. Jared Clauson had two hits and Cameron Farrell had a single.
For the Nationals, Tanner Robinson and Benoit each had a double and a single, and Alex Jannetti, Jimmy Orso and Donald Goodrich all had hits.
Bailey McKenna provided relief pitching for the Nats and Jared Clauson closed out the game for the Twins.
Major League Baseball, May 31: Phillies 11 - Blue Jays 8
The Phillies scored runs in each inning as they beat the Blue Jays 11-8. Derek Neal earned the win on the mound and helped his cause by blasting a first-inning homerun. Andrew Cunningham had two hits and scored 3 times for the Phillies. Trevor Mallett added a hit a scored for the Phillies.
Andrew LaMonica (3 hits, 3 runs) Tim Connolly (3 hits, 2 runs, 4 RBI) and Daniel Bock (2 hits, run, RBI) added a lot of offense for the Jays.
Major League Baseball, May 28: Blue Jays 6 - Phillies 5
The Blue Jays overcame a four-run deficit in the first inning to pull out the 6-5 win. Andrew LaMonica struck out seven for the Jays. Daniel Bock and Tim Connolly both had two hits and scored runs for the Jays.
James McCafferty hit a two-run homerun in the first inning and Sean McKenna collected two hits for the Phillies.
Bock closed out a scoreless sixth inning for the Jays.
Minor League Baseball: Tigers 8 - Devil Rays 5
A strong pitching performance by Devil Rays pitcher Adam Schoff held the Tigers scoreless for the first two innings. Josh White and Jack Bouchard pitched well in relief.
Jack Macdonald doubled and scored a run. Bouchard and Malcom Walter also had doubles while Cameron Turner and Joe Cooper each contributed with base hits.
For the Tigers, Joe Albert gave up runs and retired seven on 40 pitches. Nick Walsh pitched two good innings in relief, while getting a base hit and scoring twice. Kyle Peterson led the Tigers with a three-run towering homerun that made it to the fence, his second of the year. Parker Hogan caught another great game while asking if he could pitch a season low of only six times.
Minor League Baseball, May 30: Pirates 7 - Giants 4
The Pirates were backed by strong pitching performance by Reid Chase and good defense by Drew Merritt and Hugh Casteroni. Their offense was led by Jack Rohrer, Kyle McKinnon, Liam Bonner and Matt Ford with one hit each. This game was exciting for the whole six innings, with the Pirates able to squeak out the win.
For the Giants, Griffin Mercer did an outstanding job in relief, keeping the Giants in the game, while Owen Tally provided the bulk of the offense with three RBIs.
Minor League Baseball, June 2: Pirates 7 - Reds 4
The Pirates were involved in another tight game resulting in a Pirates win. Pirates were led offensively by doubles from Jack Rohrer and Liam Bonner, followed by a single from Graham Giffin. A strong combined pitching performance was shown by Liam Bonner pitching two and two-third innings, striking out seven, and Jordan Pidgeon coming in as relief pitcher for three and one-third innings, striking out seven.
The Reds received solid pitching from Matt Cusack and Hunter Henrickson in a tight game. On offense, Andrews Davis, Alex Belieau and Chris D'Aquila led the attack with a hit and walk each helping the Reds score their four runs.
Minor League Baseball, June 3: Pirates 6 - Cubs 5
The Pirates held onto their winning streak as they sneaked out a 6-5 win over a strong Cubs team. The Pirates were led offensively by Thatcher Parenteau getting on base, Jack Rohrer going one for three with a single, Matt Ford going two for two with two singles, and Jordan Pidgeon going two for three with two singles. The Pirates were backed by another strong pitching performance by Reid Chase and a strong defense by Thatcher Parenteau, Justin Lamoureaux, Kyle McKinnon and Graham Giffin, who tagged out a runner at home plate.
