York High School students to host "Carnival for a Cause"
By Jennifer L. Saunders
YORK - Imagine growing up in Croatia, where simply playing outside on a sunny day puts children in perilous danger due to abandoned minefields that linger long after a war's end.
Now imagine you can do something to help.
The students in Rebecca Hembree's four Senior World Literature classes at York High School are doing just that - and more. These soon-to-graduate York High School students are taking action to help the people of Croatia and Slovenia by sponsoring what they've called a "Fun(d)raiser" - a family carnival at the school this Saturday, June 9, to raise funds for the Adopt-a-Minefield program.
"They're becoming young adults and moving out into the world," Hembree explained.
In connection with their study of literature from around the globe, she said, they are hoping to help make the world a better place.
The Adopt-a-Minefield program's goal is to remove landmines that remain in these two countries, endangering the safety - and lives - of residents young and old.
The York High School Carnival for a Cause is being held in conjunction with the Seacoast's own "Voices from the Heart," a 130-member women's chorus that will be traveling to Croatia to sing in July while raising awareness of the problem as well as money for the Adopt-a-Minefield Foundation.
"All the profits from our Carnival for a Cause will be donated to them," Hembree said.
Weather permitting, Hembree said, Saturday's carnival will be held on the soccer field from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In case of rain, the event will be held in the Robert Butler Gymnasium. Activity tickets will be on sale with 10 tickets for just $5, and there will be a cookout with food for sale as well. Raffles will be held on the half-hour with chances to win gift certificates from local businesses.
