Calendar Raffle to benefit the Melanoma Education Foundation is seeking volunteers to sell tickets and distribute skin cancer literature outside of stores on Fridays and Saturdays through June 30. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and will work in pairs. The raffle supports skin cancer teacher-training and student materials in New England schools. Flag Day Ceremonies will be held on June 13 at 9 a.m. at Village Elementary School and June 14 at 7:45 a.m. at York Middle School and 8:45 a.m. at Coastal Ridge Elementary School.
The Next U2charist at St. George's Episcopal Church will be celebrated at 5 p.m. on June 17, at 407 York St. in York Harbor in response to the movement to Make Poverty History. This U2charist will feature music from U2's catalog, including such favorites as "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," "Pride (In the Name of Love)," "One," and their recent hit, which The Edge has said is all about what happened on the first Easter, "Window in the Skies." In the last 23 months, U2charists around the world have raised nearly $100,000 toward the Millennium Development Goals. The offering will benefit Play Pumps International and AIDS Response Seacoast, which through their work, are also in engaged in realizing the Millennium Development Goals.
Old-Time Bean Summer will be held June 16 from 5 to 7 p.m., at Laudholm Trust and the Wells Reserve. The cost for adults is $7 and for children, $4. Proceeds benefit Laudholm Trust, which supports coastal science, environmental learning and land and water stewardship at the Wells Reserve. The supper is a heart-warming, belly-filling, friend-meeting Saturday evening feast featuring pots of beans cooked all day the old-fashioned way. We'll have all the fixings and some fiddling, too. It's a delightful way to welcome summer. The Wells Reserve is located at 342 Laudholm Farm Road, just off Route 1 near the Wells-Kennebunk line. FMI: 646-4521.
Old York Garden Club's "16 Sundays in the Garden" continues June 17 at the home of Rosemarie Glynn at 4 Yorkholme Way. This garden features a number of deciduous trees and shrubs, many of which serve as a "buffer" garden used for privacy screening. Trees include magnolia, plum, apple, crabapple, birch, Japanese maple and dogwood. Spirea, weigela, viburnum, cotoneaster, forsythia, three varieties of lilac, potentilla, four varieties of blueberry and faceated willow are among the shrubs that have been planted during the past seven or eight years. A shade garden with hosta, ferns and bleeding hearts approaches a charming "frog" pond surrounded by roses and many perennials including peonies and five varieties of tree peonies. Take Route 1 North to Old Post Road and follow to Ridge Road and take a left. Go past the Smith Field on the left and take your next right onto Mitchell Road. Then take a left on Gross and left on Yorkholme Way. It is the second house on the left. The tours are Sunday afternoons from noon to 4 p.m. through Sept. 9. The fee is $3 per garden, payable at the door of the individual garden on the day of the tour, and all proceeds benefit the club's various civic development projects.

Spaghetti Dinner to benefit the Maine Chapter of the Dream Factory will be held at Norma's Restaurant on June 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. Cost for dinner is $6 for adults and $5 for seniors and kids. Children under 5 are free. The Dream Factory is a non-profit organization that grants the dreams of seriously and chronically ill children ages 3 through 18.
Spring Fling is June 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. George's Episcopal Church, 407 York St., York Harbor. It's a yard sale and more, including baked goods, fun activities for kids and more. Donations to the yard sale will be accepted the week of June 11 to 15, including bicycles, furniture, books, art, household furnishings, outdoor and garden accessories as well as any saleable items you can think of. No clothes, shoes, linens or computers, please.
"Wild Acadia" is Jerry and Marcy Monkman's stunning full-color photographic and prose tribute to the spectacular shorelines, forests and distinctive granite domes of Maine's awe-inspiring Acadia National Park. Wilderness Heals Pledge Hike is accepting reservations through June 29. The three-day Wilderness Heals Annual Pledge Hike is one of New England's most challenging all-female fundraising hikes. Join fellow women, July 20-22, for a hike through New Hampshire's White Mountains to help raise $125,000 for The Elizabeth Stone House in Boston, Mass. The Stone House serves women and their children who have experienced mental illness, domestic violence and substance abuse. Choose from four trail options, including a backcountry option. Three out of the four routes offer hikers overnight accommodations in AMC huts. Each team of four to six women will include an experienced team leader. The fundraising minimum is $1,200 and the hiker registration fee is $50. The Music Hall presents "A Celebration of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" on July 20 at 10:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now, and the late evening festivities include wizard games, costume contests, a dramatic reading and other magical surprises staged in the historic Victorian theatre. SummerFilm 2007 will offer 25 films through July 31, including the very best from independent and foreign cinema. This year, the unique Wednesday series will feature extraordinary foreign films selected from the 50th anniversary of Janus Films, the preeminent U.S. distributor of foreign and classic films. No film will show for more than three days and tickets will be available 30 minutes before the show for $8. Historic tours behind-the-scenes in the Music Hall's historic 1878 theatre, the second oldest in New England, will be held on Fridays in June at 2 p.m. Tickets are $6 and $5 for members, and all net proceeds contribute to Music Hall restoration projects. Spirit and Leadership: Building Community Two People at a Time will be held at Green Acre Baha'i School in Eliot June 9 through 10. Presenters Bob Rosenfeld and Miguel Rivera will describe their six-year effort to address and remedy racial polarization in America. In 2001, they helped the city of Rochester, NY, implement a race relations and trust-developing program called Mosaic Partnerships, whose success eventually spread to such cities as Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Boston, Greensboro, N.C., and Norfolk, Va., as well as several communities around the world. The program pairs civic leaders across racial lines, encouraging them to become friends and share experiences in the hope that these relationship-building efforts also affect the wider community. This Green Acre weekend session, which will run 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, aims to provide understanding both of the workings of the Mosaic Program and of the trends that have led to racial separation in America, plus offer solutions for building unity within communities. Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women, a nationally known non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to assist victims of intimate partner violence. Volunteers are needed to cover the organization's toll-free crisis line and ull training is offered. You may answer calls right from your home on weekdays, nights, weekends and/or holidays. The training is 40 hours and will consist of online and teleconferencing sessions. Volunteers must have access to a computer with an Internet connection. Home Schooling Club a la Carte offers a chance to meet, socialize, have fun and take field trips with others from the community who home school just like you! Attend all of the activities or simply pick and choose from the calendar of events and activities. On June 8 and June 22, from 1 to 4 p.m., be a part of the Mt. A. Boy's Club for all boys eight years old and up to hang out, play video and computer games, build stuff, run remote-controlled vehicles, play games, enjoy many outside activities and have tons of fun. On June 29 from 1 to 3 p.m. it will be Mt. A. Day where you can join us for lots of outside fresh-air fun with games and activities, kite flying, nature hikes, wildlife tracking, bird watching and all the natural beauty this precious resource has to offer. The Southern Maine Agency on Aging facilitates a monthly support group for people assisting older adult loved ones. Unpaid family and friends who are helping spouses, parents, siblings and friends are invited to come and talk about the challenges and rewards of care-giving with other people in similar situations. Coffee Shop at the Wells-Ogunquit Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 to 11 a.m., serving regular or decaf coffee, pastries, Congdon's and Dunkin' Donuts, and their own blueberry muffins for $1.50. Thursday's Coffee Club occasionally has a guest speaker.

Hospice of York's Living with Loss is a bereavement support group offered free of charge, and you need not have had a loved one serviced by Hospice. Hospice of York encourages pre-registration; however, you may attend any or all of the classes as you see fit. The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group, which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Those who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.
