Support Louise Works Fund

Dear Independent,

Many of you probably know that Louise Works' home was gutted by fire on Tuesday, June 5. Louise and her deceased husband, Leon, were dedicated founding volunteers of York Ambulance. Not only did they faithfully serve the ambulance for over 30 years, but they were also very involved in other organizations and served our community and its citizens.

Louise had no insurance on the house - so the fire has been devastating to her and her family.

Members of the board of directors and crew from York Ambulance met with members of York's Masonic Lodge, York Village Fire Department, York Police Department and Norma Clark of Norma's Restaurant to plan a fundraising dinner generously offered by Norma. She's proposed a roasted turkey dinner with potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, vegetable and dessert at her restaurant with all the proceeds going to the Louise Works Fund that has been established at Kennebunk Savings Bank. We also held a roundtable discussion as to how we can all help with combined efforts for a community "Extreme Home Makeover" reconstruction effort for Louise.

The dinner will be held on Friday, June 29, at Norma's Restaurant from 5 until 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold in advance at Norma's and available at the Parks and Recreation Office, as well as other locations throughout town, or you may buy them at the door. The cost will be $10 per adult and $4 per child.

We would appreciate your support by making a donation to The Louise Works Family Fire Fund, or attending the dinner on the 29th, or supporting other upcoming fundraising events.

A fund has been established at Kennebunk Savings Bank and donations may be made to: The Louise Works and Family Fire Fund, 16 Woodbridge Road, P.O. Box 39, York, ME  03909-0039.

Thank you sincerely,

Mary Andrews, President

YMS teachers say thanks

Dear Independent,

Having just celebrated our 20th year of bringing William Shakespeare to sixth graders at York Middle School, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the many parents and community members who have been so supportive through the years.

Each year parents have performed many important roles such as pig roasters, seamstresses, ladies of the kitchen, hosts for the gaming glen and marketplace characters, in addition to the scores who help set up and take down all the various activities.

We would also like to recognize and thank the following local businesses, which have contributed to make our Shakespeare Festival a success: Coastal Landscaping, Kittery Rent-All and Graphiti Screenprinting and Signs.

Each year, the actors of the New Hampshire Theater Project provide our students with theatrical expertise and confidence to perform in a professional manner. Our final thank-you goes to the administration and staff at YMS who help to create an event that our students will fondly remember for years to come.

Sincerely,

Tony Beaumier, Paula Bogard, Elaine Booth and Cindy Bernier
York Middle School

Thanks for finding purse

Dear Independent,

To the super person who retrieved my pocketbook and to the great personnel at the courtesy desk at Hannaford, my sincerest thank-you!

You're all the greatest.

Thanks from Old York

Dear Independent,

On behalf of the Old York Historical Society I would like to thank everyone who generously contributed items for the "Old Fashioned Yard Sale." Thanks also to those who came out on Saturday to support the museum through their purchases. Together, we raised more than $4,000 to support the work we do preserving the history of York for the education and enjoyment of all.

This event would not have been possible without the help of our dedicated corps of volunteers. Nancy Gustad kept us all organized and properly caffeinated; Susan Stanley and Barbara Heintz unpacked hundreds of boxes, set up the room and then came back to help with the sale on Saturday; Karen Arsenault and a team of bakers made sure we had plenty of goodies on hand to sell to hungry shoppers; Frank Wallace, Peter Blanchard and Dexter Spiller helped load up the trucks and transport items from storage; Bob Hayward of Fisher James Co. loaned us a large box truck that made moving and cleanup much easier on all of us; Lou Hargan was our primary customer service specialist, working at the cashiers desk all day Saturday, and Betty Griffen, Joan Curtis and Charley Steedman worked on our cleanup crew, removing remaining items, boxes and trash. Our thanks also to the Bennett family for providing the storage space and First Parish Church for the perfect event venue!

Finally, I would also like to extend a very special thank you to Liz Boardman and Carol Fox at Family Tree Antiques and to my colleagues here at Old York. Liz and Carol spent night after night sorting and pricing thousands of items, never stopping until the work was done. My colleagues did whatever needed to be done to get the job done - lifting, sorting, cleaning, organizing and, when necessary, holding down the fort.

Thank you all for your ideas and hard work! This event could never have been done without you.
