Athletes honored with 2007 Spring Sports Awards

YORK - York High School Athletic Director Ted Welch greeted a large, enthusiastic crowd of students and parents on Monday night, June 11, when he presented the annual Spring Sports Awards.
First to be honored were the League All-Stars, as chosen by their opponents, which included Dan Moran and Matt Haight in baseball. Jessica Cassotis and Kiah Voyer-Colbath were honored for girls' lacrosse. In tennis, the All-Stars were Susan Barton and Lauren Coupal for the girls and Jake Posternak for the boys.
The track teams included the largest group of All-Stars with 18 in all, namely Molly Carl, Annie Boardman, Lindsay Weigel, Lacey Cartier, Chelsey Tewell, Emily Goering, Jenna Hosmer, Danielle Clements, Morgan Taylor, Sibley Blum, Tom Ciampa, Robert Cook, Andrew Hirst, Mark Vogel, Zach Prugar, Regan Cleminson and Andrew Potter.
Welch then recognized the girls' track team as state runners-up and accepted a plaque for the school.
Next the girls' tennis team presented a plaque as Western Maine runners-up.
Individual state champs in track were also honored, with Sibley Blum winning the pole vault and Lacey Cartier the 800-meter race Chelsey Tewell won the 100-meter hurdles and the 100-meter dash. Tom Ciampa was the champion in the race-walk while Danielle Clements, Morgan Taylor, Molly Carl and Lacey Cartier combined to win the girls 4x400-meter relay.
Team awards were presented by the coaches in separate breakout sessions.
In girls' lacrosse, awards went to Jessica Cassotis for defense and Kortnee Cribby as the "Unsung Hero." Most Improved went to Ashley Neal and the offense award to Kiah Voyer-Colbath. Megan Yorke won the 110-Percent Award.
In boys' lacrosse, Cory Borgel and Cameron Dillon won the Heart/Passion awards. Dan Powers was honored as MVP and Alexander Quinn as Most Improved. Tom Ross won the Ground Ball Award and Michael Cline von the JV-MVP.
Baseball awards were presented to MVP Dan Moran and Unsung Hero David McKinnon. The Coach's Award was presented to Stephen Buonchristiano and the JV awards were given to Jerry Ashley and Patrick Seaward.
Softball awards were given to Stephanie Lomasney as Most Improved and Caitlin Keating for Outstanding Leadership. Linnie Blais won the batting award for 2007 and Rebecca Enright for 2006.
In girls' tennis, Frawley Barton was recognized for an undefeated season and Lauren Coupal and Susan Barton as Co- MVPs.
Honored in boys' tennis were Ben Forrest and Giancarlo DeSario as Most Improved.
Track and field awards went to Molly Carl and Danielle Clements as Most Improved for the girls and to Lacey Cartier and Chelsey Tewell as MVP. The Coach's Award went to Sibley Blum and Morgan Taylor and the Maddog Award to Regan Cleminson.
For the boys, Andrew Hirst and Mark Vogel were selected as MVP and Nathan Hirst and Matt Wagner as Most Improved. The Maddog Award went to Andrew Hirst and the Coach's Award to Zachary Prugar.
Welch also announced that the "Major Jacket Awards" for "three varsity letters in one sport or a total of five varsity letters" will be presented at a "date to be announced."
Welch also said the York wrestling team will host team Nebraska on June 21 at 6 p.m. in the Robert E. Butler Gymnasium. A total of 16 wrestlers from Nebraska will square off with several wrestlers from Southern Maine - including a few from York.
