SMMC Visiting Nurses award nursing scholarship
KENNEBUNK - SMMC Visiting Nurses is pleased to announce that Lindsay D'Ascanio of Kennebunk has been selected as the recipient of the annual $1,000 Joanne Wrba Memorial Nursing Scholarship this year.
Lindsay received the award as a Kennebunk High School student who also attended the Biddeford Regional Center for Technology. he will be attending St. Joseph's College of Maine this Fall in the Nursing Program. Lindsay enjoys the elderly and has been working in the dining room at Atria, an assisted living facility in Kennebunk since 2005. She also competes at the varsity level on the swim team and is artistically inclined besides achieving high academic recognition.
The Scholarship Committee was impressed with all of the applications submitted this year realizing only one could be awarded the scholarship, but that the interest in nursing is increasing. The Scholarship Committee wishes all candidates much success in the rewarding field of nursing and is confident that Lindsay will make an outstanding nurse.
The Joanne Wrba Memorial Nursing Scholarship was created to honor our co-worker and friend, Joanne Wrba, who worked for SMMC Visiting Nurses for eight years. Joanne touched many lives through her compassionate, warm manner and through her profession as a Registered Nurse. She died, much too young at the age of 51 years, in 2002 after a heroic battle against cancer, and continues to be missed by all who knew her. The creation of this scholarship has helped us heal and remember Joanne in a special way. Lindsay D'Ascanio is the sixth recipient of the $1,000 nursing scholarship. To date all recipients are still actively pursuing nursing at college and two are slated to graduate this year.
SMMC Visiting Nurses is a non-profit Medicare certified and nationally accredited home health agency with offices in Kennebunk and Biddeford. The agency was started in 1909 to serve the town of Kennebunk by the Parsons family and now extends all of its nursing and therapy skilled services throughout York County as an affiliate of Southern Maine Medical Center.
