York High School Class of 2007 Commencement Scholars

VALEDICTORIAN KEVIN JAMES HIGGINS is the son of Arthur and Joanne Higgins. He was a member of the National Honor Society and World Language National Honor Society (French), as well as the YHS math team. Kevin was the recipient of the Williams College Book Award and the Bausch and Lomb Science Award and has received numerous awards in math, the sciences and languages. He was captain and dedicated member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams. He was on the 4X800 state championship relay team in 2005, has competed in several New England championship meets and enjoyed writing weekly cross country and track articles for The Independent. Kevin played trombone in the York High School concert and jazz bands and was honored to play in the Maine District I and All-State Festivals. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 301 and an Eagle Scout. He was also a member of the Saint Christopher Church Youth Ministry, participating in several summer mission trips. Kevin will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the fall to study engineering.

SALUTATORIAN KATHERINE LINDBOM is the daughter of Peter and Nancy Lindbom and sister to Jeffrey, George and Eric. She was a four-year member of the field hockey and lacrosse teams and captained both in her senior year. She was also a member of the girls' ice hockey team and the ice hockey all-star team. As an avid runner and biker, Katherine participated in several triathlons over the past four years and plans to continue the sport in college. Katherine was class officer for four years, serving as class president her junior and senior years. She was also vice president of the National Honor Society and a member of TIDALWAVSE (Teens in Drug Awareness Leading Working and Valuing Self-Esteem). Katherine will be inducted into the United States Naval Academy on June 27 where she plans to pursue a degree in mathematics.

SUSAN BARTON is the daughter of Thomas Barton and Patricia Frawley, and sister of Elizabeth and Frawley Barton. Susan was a four-year tennis and soccer player, and a captain of both teams her senior year. She was a four-year member of the Civil Rights team and vice president of the Interact Club her senior year. Susan received the German III award her junior year and was inducted into the World Language National Honor Society. Last summer Susan participated in a mission trip to Honduras with the AMIGOS program. Susan will graduate with honors and attend Boston College in the fall.

IAN BOND, son of John and Patricia, and brother to Patrick, is a member of the World Language National Honor Society and the National Honor Society at YHS. He played basketball and four years of football, earning two varsity letters. Ian is an involved member of the Boy Scouts of America, having earned the highest scouting distinction by receiving the Eagle Scout Award. He also received an Award for Excellence in Industrial Education from Mr. Hoyt. Ian has remained on the honor roll or high honor roll for his entire high school career. Next year Ian will attend Northeastern University where he will study engineering.

LACEY LOUGHMAN CARTIER is the daughter of Candace and Rick Jaffe of Cape Neddick, and Dean Cartier of Newcastle, Maine. After completing her freshman year at Lincoln Academy, she continued her academic and athletic achievements at YHS. Inducted into both the National Honor Society and the World Language National Honor Society, Lacey received the Yale Book Award and was a Wendy's High School Heisman Award State Finalist. As a dedicated member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams, she was elected captain for all three sports in her senior year. Fortunate enough to be a part of conference and state championship teams, Lacey also earned numerous individual athletic distinctions. These included an indoor 800m State Championship, a 2006 Western Maine Conference MVP selection and recognition as Portsmouth Herald's 2005 Indoor Track Athlete and 2004 XC Runner of the Year. Serving the community as a student listener and a volunteer coach for York's summer track program, she is enjoying her current summer position as a junior day camp counselor for York Parks and Recreation. Lacey will attend Springfield College in the fall with an intended major of therapeutic recreation services.

KRISTINA CLEMENTS, daughter of Roger and Gai and sister to Danielle, is a graduating senior at York High School. Kristina is a member of both the National Honor Society and the World Language National Honor Society. Kristina participated in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track and was a senior captain of the indoor team this winter. She also participated in activities outside of YHS, including a mission trip to Honduras with the First Parish Church. Her junior year she was a recipient of the Smith Book Award. Next fall Kristina plans to attend the University of Maine Orono to major in human nutrition.

JOE CORSELLO is the son of Maryann and Carl Corsello and sister to Therese. Joe was a four-year varsity starter for both the soccer and basketball teams at YHS. He also captained both sports teams in his junior and senior years. He earned All-State selections in his junior and senior year in soccer. Outside of school-sponsored athletics, Joe has captained his premier club team, Seacoast United, the last five seasons. He led his team to the last four New Hampshire state championships and also earned a number eight national ranking last year. In his spare time he enjoys being with friends and family. Next year, Joe will attend the University of New Hampshire where he plans to major in engineering and play on the UNH soccer team.

REBECCA ENRIGHT is the daughter of Marie and Stephen Enright and sister to Mike, Phil, Melissa and Tom. She played field hockey and softball throughout high school and was a captain of the softball team. She was a National Merit Commended Student, a member of the National Honor Society and World Language National Honor Society and was awarded the Women's Engineering Book Award as well as academic awards in English, biology, math and Spanish. She was a four-year member of chorus and also volunteered her time coaching younger girls in both basketball and field hockey. Becky will attend the University of New England in the fall to study physical therapy.

WINONA ROSE HAPGOOD is the daughter of Wayne Hapgood and Laura Messersmith, and the sister of Lauren and Spencer. She was a member of the field hockey team for four years. She also ran indoor track for four seasons and participated in spring track for three seasons. She was a two-year member of the World Language National Honor Society (Spanish) and also the recipient of the Phi Beta Kappa award her junior year. As a student listener, she was a mentor for a fourth grader at Coastal Ridge Elementary School. She was a member of the York Action Team of volunteers of America during her senior year and a member of the Interact Club as a sophomore. Winona will attend East Carolina University this fall.

RACHEL KASBOHM, daughter of John Kasbohm of New Hampton, N.H., and Christine Rubin of York, and sister to Gregory and Amanda Kasbohm, was a four-year member of TIDALWAVSE (Teens in Drug Awareness Leading Working and Valuing Self-Esteem), two-year member of the National Honor Society and the World Language National Honor Society, a student government representative for three years and a senior facilitator her last year. In addition to her many activities, she participated in Sticker Shock and the United Way's Day of Caring all four years. Rachel also maintained honors for her high school career while working a year-round job. She is especially proud of implementing TIDALWAVSE into the middle school health curriculum with a fellow student. This fall, Rachel will attend the Honors College of the University of Maine Orono and plans to pursue a career in criminal psychology or a degree in law.

ANNA BOND LIFVERGREN is the daughter of Allen and Pat Lifvergren. She was president of the National Honor Society, editor-in-chief of the yearbook, a YHS Chamber Singer, a student government representative and a senior facilitator. She is especially proud of her work as two-year president of TIDALWAVSE (Teens in Drug Awareness Leading Working and Valuing Self-Esteem). She was the recipient of the Maine Principal's Association Award, the Wellesley College Book Award, the Kodak Young Leaders Award and the Voice of Democracy Award, as well as other academic awards, and is a member of the World Language National Honor Society. Anna traveled to France, Italy and Greece as a People-to-People Student Ambassador, and will travel to Brazil this summer to do research in the Pantanal. She participated in the First Parish Church mission trip to Machias last summer, and has studied piano for eight years. This fall, Anna will attend the Honors Program at Simmons College in Boston on the Dean's Scholarship.

ZACHARY PRUGAR, son of Tom and Mary Prugar, brother to Jared, Aaron and Noah, was a four-year member of the football, basketball and track and field teams, of which he was a captain of the football and track teams. He was chosen as York High School's representative for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award to recognize his academic and athletic achievements. He was part of the World Language National Honor Society (German) for two years, and also served as class treasurer his senior year. He earned honor roll recognition throughout his four years of high school. Zach will attend Penn State University in the fall to study kinesiology.

KRISTIN MARY RAYMOND, daughter of Kevin and Cindy Raymond and sister of Michelle, has distinguished herself at York High School as a student, musician, civil servant and overall leader. As the 2007 president of Interact, she led the club to its most successful year in school history. She is also an active member of YORKWISE. Over the years she has had the opportunity to develop her leadership skills through the National Student Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., and Maine Girls' State. Both occasions allowed her the opportunity to develop her leadership skills while exploring two of her passions: politics and the legal system. Additionally, she has been a strong presence in her church community, ministering as lector, Eucharistic minister and choir member at St. Christopher Church. Her involvement in the Youth Ministry program is also noteworthy, as she is a member of the youth leadership team and will be attending her third mission trip, this one to rebuild homes for first-generation Americans in Aurora, Ill. She has also been very involved in the music department at YHS as a member of the Chamber Singers. She was selected as a member of the 2007 All-State Chorus as well as a four-time member of the Maine District I Honors Chorus. As a student she is a member of the World Language National Honor Society in Spanish. She will attend Colby College in the fall to study international studies and government. 

KELLY PATRICIA SHEAHAN, daughter of Kathleen and Michael Sheahan, was born in San Diego, Calif. Prior to arriving in Maine in 2002, Kelly lived in California, South Korea, Virginia and Spain. She was a member of numerous clubs and activities at YHS including the National Honor Society, World Language National Honor Society (Spanish), vice president of the Key Club, Political Awareness and a Civil Rights team member. Active in sports, Kelly was a member of the varsity cheerleading, field hockey and lacrosse teams. As part of her church youth group, Kelly volunteered for three years on their annual mission trip. She was also selected for the D.A. for a Day program sponsored by the York County District Attorney. Kelly won several awards while at YHS, including the Tufts University Citizenship and Public Service Award, academic achievement awards in psychology and English, high honors all four years and a merit scholarship at The College of New Jersey where she plans to study pre-law and international studies. 

ALYSON SWEET, daughter of Donald and Patrice Sweet and sister of Diana and Lindsay, was a member of the field hockey, indoor and outdoor track and field, and women's ice hockey teams. A member of the YHS Chamber Singers as well as a District and All-State soprano, Alyson was also on the YHS stage in the past four musicals and played the trombone and baritone horn in the concert band. She was the treasurer of the National Honor Society and a member of the World Language National Honor Society for German as well as secretary of the Key Club and a member of the YHS Civil Rights Team. She was involved in the Student Listener program at Coastal Ridge Elementary School for two years and worked as a math tutor for third and fourth graders. She received the Middlebury College Book Award in her junior year and was honored with the Western Maine Citizenship Award as well as the DAR Citizenship Award this year. Alyson will be living and studying in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, as a Rotary exchange student for a year before attending college in the states in 2008.

JENNIFER THIBAULT is the daughter of Debbie and Don Thibault and the sister of Peter Thibault. She was a member of the World Language National Honor Society (German). A trumpet and French horn player, Jen played in the high school concert and jazz bands. Within school, Jen also spent time mentoring a student in the elementary school through the Student Listener program and was part of the Senior Facilitator program. She also enjoyed spending her afternoons as a member of various sports teams including field hockey as well as indoor and outdoor track. In 2005 and 2006 she participated in two mission trips to Honduras during the summers. She will attend The College of William and Mary next year.

GREG WILSON is the son of Lori and Linwood Wilson and brother of Meredith Wilson. He was a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the World Language National Honor Society and was the recipient of the Urkunde Certificate in 2006 for outstanding achievement in German and was a student listener his junior year. He played for Seacoast United Soccer Club for six years, serving as captain the last two years. This past summer he was selected to travel to Ireland with the Atlantic Crossing soccer team to play in the Galway Cup. Greg will attend Endicott College in the fall where he plans to play for the men's soccer team and major in sports management.
