Fireworks back on in Ogunquit

By Melissa Wood

OGUNQUIT - Yes, there will be a Fourth of July fireworks display this year in town, according to Leanne Cusimano, chairwoman of the Village Spirit Committee, the group responsible for organizing and raising funds for this year's display.

The fireworks display will be held on Friday, July 6.

In a plan that differs from previous years, the committee intends to have the fireworks launched from a barge off Ogunquit Beach in order to not disturb the piping plover nests that are on the beach.

Concerns about protecting those nests have caused the fireworks display to be canceled for the last two years.

Ogunquit Town Manager Phil Clark confirmed that the Village Spirit Committee would be updating the Board of Selectmen at their meeting on Tuesday, June 19, which was held after press time.

Prior to the meeting, Clark stated that the fireworks would most likely be a go.

The Village Spirit Committee's proposal for the offshore was approved by the selectmen on April 5 pending a detailed plan for safety and with limited impact on the town budget.

The committee has been responsible for raising money, coordinating with different town departments and working with Maine Audubon and the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to make sure everything is done to their satisfaction.

"It hasn't been easy, but it's been an education," said Cusimano.
