YORK STUDENTS NAMED FINALISTS IN TOP POP CONTEST. What could a dad like more than going to a baseball game with his family on Father's Day? For a few local dads, it was getting the chance to go to that game because their daughters wrote about them as the "Top Pops" in Maine. Coastal Ridge Elementary School students Emma Cusack and Marissa Ford, seen here, were able to really honor their dads for Father's Day on Sunday. The two fourth-grade students were among only 10 young authors in their age group to be named finalists in "Top Pop," Time Warner Cable's Best Dad Contest. The two young writers had to put their literary skills to the test, using their love of writing to honor their fathers and be named finalists in the contest. Although they did not win, Marissa said it was great to be able to attend a Portland Sea Dogs game, where she and Emma were able to join other finalists from across the state in throwing out the first pitch. The two students, along with York Middle School student Alexa Bando, who was a finalist in her division, were showered with gifts for their achievement. Both Emma and Marissa said they love writing, they love their families and they would definitely take part in a contest like this again. And what did their fathers think of the event? Both girls said their families agreed that June 17 was one of the best Father's Day celebrations they have had. Photo by Jennifer L. Saunders
