York Major League baseball championship action
YORK - York Little League's playoffs and championship games were held throughout the past week.
On June 11, the Astros defeated the Padres by a score of 8 to 0.
In a solid game, the Astros came out on top as Evan McElwain pitched three strong innings and Josh Donohoe finished with two solid innings. Combined, they struck out nine Padres en route to the 8-0 win.
On offense, the Astros were led by McElwain, Donohoe, Alex Mercurio, Aaron Todd and Dylan McShera, each with two hits. McShera contributed three RBIs.
For the Padres, Morgan Briggs, Hayden Webster, Justin Frecker and Cameron Frecker each had a hit. Taylor Newton and Hayden Webster combined to strike out six Astro hitters.
On June 14, the Astros defeated the Nationals by a score of 6 to 5.
In a game where great plays both offensively and defensively seemed to define the moment, the Astros prevailed scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out single by Dylan McShera scoring Alex Mercurio from second base for a 6-5 win.
Down 5-1 going into the sixth, the Nationals rallied with three runs in the fifth highlighted by a two run Tanner Robinson homerun off relief pitcher Aaron Todd. In the sixth, the Nationals scored one run on an Alex Janetti lead-off single followed by an Alec Steffenberg single and a wild pitch. The Nationals also had hits by Donald Goodrich (solo homerun), Bailey McKenna, Mitchell Benoit and Adam Janetti. Tanner Robinson pitched well for the Nationals.
The Astros got a strong four-inning pitching performance by Alex Mercurio and offensively were led by Evan McElwain (3 hits), Josh Donohoe (2 hits), Alex Mercurio (2 hits/3 RBIs), Dylan McShera (2 hits), and Kevin Barrett (1 hit). Defensively, Michael Gallagher made a tremendous run-saving catch of a pop-up behind first base from his second base position.
In the Major League Championship Game on June 16, it was the Astros with 6 and the Marlins, 2.
The Astros played solid defense and got four strong innings from Aaron Todd striking out nine while allowing only two hits to defeat the Marlins for the Major League Baseball Championship. Evan McElwain pitched well in relief over two innings.
Defensively, Josh Mitchell was stellar at third base with three assists and a putout in the last two innings. Offensively, the Astros were led by Michael Gallagher (2 hits/2 runs), Evan McElwain (3 hits/3 runs), Josh Donohoe (1 hit/3 RBIs), Colin Torres (1 run) and Aaron Todd (2 RBIs).
For the Marlins, Kyle Cone pitched five solid innings, striking out four batters. Kyle Cone, Conor Tully and Peter Carley each had a hit leading the Marlins offense. Carley and Tully scored the two runs.
