"Norma" honored with 2007 Ulan Award

By Jennifer L. Saunders

YORK - It is a tradition in town to commemorate Marty Ulan's life of service by honoring one special person each year with the Martin Ulan Citizenship Award.

This year, that special person is Norma Clark of Norma's Restaurant fame.

On Friday, June 15, Clark was recognized by the York Rotary Club as the 2007 Ulan Award winner.

Mary Andrews, a former local legislator and selectwoman who has also been honored this year as the Elks Club's citizen of the year, explained after the event that Clark has demonstrated a great commitment to community service in town.

"She's put on a lot of dinners and is very active in the Dream Factory," Andrews said of the many benefits Clark has hosted at her Route 1 restaurant for worthy causes such as the Dream Factory, which grants the "wishes" of seriously and chronically ill children.

Clark, along with Andrews and others, is also working to help coordinate the Louise Works Fund to help longtime local resident and York Ambulance Association benefactress Louise Works rebuild after a devastating fire left her family home uninhabitable earlier this month.

And, Andrews said, the night before receiving the Ulan Award, Clark had been at work making sandwiches for the York High School graduating class - something she does each year.

The Ulan Citizenship Award honors what organizers have described as a lifetime of service to his communities on the part of Ulan, who died back in 1995 at the age of 83.

Last year's Ulan Award winner was Dick Filliettaz, who has become widely known in York and beyond for his tireless efforts to support the troops with care packages, phone cards and well-wishes while they serve overseas. Other past winners include Virginia Spiller, Lorraine Moulton and Stacie Kerrigan.
