EVENTS
"An Inconvenient Truth" will be held on June 28 at 7 p.m. at the Wells Reserve. This is a live presentation taken from the slideshow in the major motion picture. Steve Miller presents the show, which details the planetary emergency of global warming and what we can do about it. The presentation is free with Wells Reserve admission, but donations are accepted. DessertFest! Join the fun on July 5 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Union Congregational Church's celebration of the dessert. This culinary extravaganza will feature many of the church members' favorite homemade desserts. Included will be pies, cakes, cookies, fudge and who knows what else. Admission is $5 per person, which will include tickets for a personal selection of three desserts and a beverage. Additional tickets will be available for purchase. The church is conveniently located in the heart of York Beach on Church Street, across from the ball field.
International Piano Festival will be held through July 1 at the Portland Conservatory of Music. Festival Concert Series and week-ending recital tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students, members of the Portland Conservatory of Music are free. Maine Bicycle Rally, a three-day bicycle rally featuring nearly 30 rides for all levels of cyclists, will take place July 6 through 8 in Yarmouth. The Maine Bicycle Rally will provide a full weekend of entertainment including sunrise, sunset and stargazing night bike rides, a recycle bike art show, bike parade, ice cream social and Maine Bike Expo. The weekend price includes camping, food such as big breakfasts, picnic lunches and all-you-can-eat dinner, all rides, entertainment and a Maine Bike Rally T-shirt. Maine Celtic Celebration will be held July 19 through 22 in Belfast. The Maine Celtic Celebration is committed to renewing the rich Celtic history, culture and hospitality found along the coast of Maine. Planned events will take place along the waterfront in scenic Belfast and in various other places around the town and general Midcoast area. Expect live Celtic music, storytelling and dance; sporting events with Highland Games and a rugby scrum, and contests such as a "Celtic Iron Chef," Men in Kilts, Cheese Roll and a kilted run and row. Plans are in place for a children's area, events of interest to seniors, history, arts, literary experiences, a parade, Piping in the Park and much more. Old York Garden Club's "16 Sundays in the Garden" continues July 1 at the home of Bobbi McGann at 1 Rivermouth Road. The landscape and gardens are relatively new to this home built in 2004. The gardens consist of small islands built in the lawn. Boulders, which were blasted out for the basement, are placed in each island as if left behind by a glacier many years ago. Plantings are mostly native, deer-resistant shrubs, perennials and annuals. In another area a wildflower meadow is being attempted to replace lawn. Take Route 1-A/York Street to Route 103. Take a right onto Route 103 and follow across the York River. Immediately at the end of the bridge, turn left on Harris Island Road. Take your next left, about .2 miles, onto Rivermouth Road, a private driveway. 1 Rivermouth Road is the first house on the right. The tours are Sunday afternoons from noon to 4 p.m. through Sept. 9. The fee is $3 per garden, payable at the door of the individual garden on the day of the tour, and all proceeds benefit the club's various civic development projects.

Wilderness Heals Pledge Hike is accepting reservations through June 29. The three-day Wilderness Heals Annual Pledge Hike is one of New England's most challenging all-female fundraising hikes. Join fellow women, July 20-22, for a hike through New Hampshire's White Mountains to help raise $125,000 for The Elizabeth Stone House in Boston, Mass. The Stone House serves women and their children who have experienced mental illness, domestic violence and substance abuse. Choose from four trail options, including a backcountry option. Three out of the four routes offer hikers overnight accommodations in AMC huts. Each team of four to six women will include an experienced team leader. The fundraising minimum is $1,200 and the hiker registration fee is $50. Laudholm Trust's Seventh Annual Painterly Day and Fresh Paint Auction will be held on July 15. A total of 90 artists will paint pastoral landscapes, historic buildings and quintessential Maine beach and marsh scenes. Their works later hang in the magnificent Laudholm barn for silent and live auctions. The public is invited to watch artists at work during the day. Admission to the site is $1 for ages 6 to 16, $2 for those over 16 and free for members of Laudholm Trust. FMI 646-4521.
The Music Hall presents "A Celebration of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" on July 20 at 10:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now, and the late evening festivities include wizard games, costume contests, a dramatic reading and other magical surprises staged in the historic Victorian theatre. SummerFilm 2007 will offer 25 films through July 31, including the very best from independent and foreign cinema. This year, the unique Wednesday series will feature extraordinary foreign films selected from the 50th anniversary of Janus Films, the preeminent U.S. distributor of foreign and classic films. No film will show for more than three days and tickets will be available 30 minutes before the show for $8. Historic tours behind-the-scenes in the Music Hall's historic 1878 theatre, the second oldest in New England, will be held on Fridays in June at 2 p.m. Tickets are $6 and $5 for members, and all net proceeds contribute to Music Hall restoration projects. "Portraits from the Edge of the World," a photography exhibit by Charles Carpenter, is on display in USM's Glickman Family Library in the seventh floor UNUM Great Reading Room and on the library's fifth floor. Viva Italia, a concert of Italian popular music will be presented at the Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport, free of charge on June 27. Highly regarded tenor John Manzo, accompanied by the accomplished pianist Warren King, will present an hour of Italian favorites to set the mood for the Colony Restaurant's Italian buffet. They will be performing from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Marine Room at the hotel. Manzo and King have been well-received at the annual L'Opera per Vigilia Anno Nuovo, and will reprise some of the favorite arias from that program, as well as more familiar Italian songs. Safe Boating Courses will be offered by the Saco Bay Flotilla of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. "Suddenly in Command" is for people who are usually passengers on boats. If the primary boat operator is incapacitated would you know how to get help and return to safety? A two-lesson class will be presented July 18 and 19 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and the fee is $45. "How to Read a Nautical Chart" will be held July 25 and 26 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Charts contain a wealth of information, but you need to know how to properly read and interpret them. Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women, a nationally known non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to assist victims of intimate partner violence. Volunteers are needed to cover the organization's toll-free crisis line and ull training is offered. You may answer calls right from your home on weekdays, nights, weekends and/or holidays. The training is 40 hours and will consist of online and teleconferencing sessions. Volunteers must have access to a computer with an Internet connection. Home Schooling Club a la Carte offers a chance to meet, socialize, have fun and take field trips with others from the community who home school just like you! Attend all of the activities or simply pick and choose from the calendar of events and activities. On June 22, from 1 to 4 p.m., be a part of the Mt. A. Boy's Club for all boys eight years old and up to hang out, play video and computer games, build stuff, run remote-controlled vehicles, play games, enjoy many outside activities and have tons of fun. On June 29 from 1 to 3 p.m. it will be Mt. A. Day where you can join us for lots of outside fresh-air fun with games and activities, kite flying, nature hikes, wildlife tracking, bird watching and all the natural beauty this precious resource has to offer. The Southern Maine Agency on Aging facilitates a monthly support group for people assisting older adult loved ones. Coffee Shop at the Wells-Ogunquit Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 to 11 a.m., serving regular or decaf coffee, pastries, Congdon's and Dunkin' Donuts, and their own blueberry muffins for $1.50. Thursday's Coffee Club occasionally has a guest speaker.

Hospice of York's Living with Loss is a bereavement support group offered free of charge, and you need not have had a loved one serviced by Hospice. Hospice of York encourages pre-registration; however, you may attend any or all of the classes as you see fit. The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group, which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Those who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.
