York County Domestic Violence Task Force reunites

YORK and OGUNQUIT - After about five years of silence, the York County Domestic Violence Task Force is stepping up once again in the fight against domestic violence.

YCDVTF is a coalition of community members who have come together to work in partnership to stop domestic violence in York County.

With at least 60,000 Mainers suffering from domestic violence every year, and about 8,000 of those in York County alone, the task force is saying enough is enough.

The group provides leadership in developing and implementing a coordinated community response that effectively promotes safety for victims, holds abusers accountable and demonstrates that domestic violence will not be tolerated in York County.

The group started in 1998 with just five members. Over the years, it has made extraordinary progress and has grown to include dozens of members.

In addition to Caring Unlimited advocates and formerly battered women, the task force working membership includes individuals from diverse segments of the York County community including law enforcement, the courts, service providers, the schools, health care and mental health providers, children's services, batterer's intervention program staff and others.

The Task Force wants people to realize that domestic violence is real, and it's happening here.
