Paintings by Mike Culver
OGUNQUIT - Michael Culver, executive director and curator of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, who has brought us this extraordinary 2007 exhibit featuring paintings by Jamie Wyeth, is a well-rounded art professional, one who wears many hats.
In addition to his responsibility in directing and managing the OMAA and, in so doing, bringing important art to this area, he is a noted teacher, writer and also an artist in his own right, one who has shown in solo and group exhibitions in New York, Maine and in numerous other states.
A 1977 Fulbright Scholar, he worked in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. He holds a doctorate of philosophy in art history from the University of Louisville, Ky., where he has also taught and is listed in "Who's Who in American Art" and other publications.
Culver's paintings have been hailed as "suffused with energy" and "created from fields of complex and intense color."
Abstract, full of saturated color, with overlaying textures and forms suggestive of seasonal landscapes, his noteworthy work has been on view in a special Maine exhibition, "Mike Culver Paintings" at Mathias Fine Art, Barter's Island, Trevett, Maine.
