IN THE WEEKS AHEAD...

EVENTS

DessertFest! Join the fun on July 5 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Union Congregational Church's celebration of the dessert. This culinary extravaganza will feature many of the church members' favorite homemade desserts. Included will be pies, cakes, cookies, fudge and who knows what else. Admission is $5 per person, which will include tickets for a personal selection of three desserts and a beverage. Additional tickets will be available for purchase. The church is conveniently located in the heart of York Beach on Church Street, across from the ball field. 

Dragonflies and Damselflies: Odes to Joy will be presented on July 14 from 10 a.m. to noon. Join the York County Audubon Society, Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve and the York Land Trust for a field trip led by Sue Bickford to study dragonflies and damselflies. Meet at the YLT office for a short presentation and then visit a YLT property to observe them up close. The rain date is July 15. Call 363-7400 to register.

Maine Bicycle Rally, a three-day bicycle rally featuring nearly 30 rides for all levels of cyclists, will take place July 6 through 8 in Yarmouth.  The Maine Bicycle Rally will provide a full weekend of entertainment including sunrise, sunset and stargazing night bike rides, a recycle bike art show, bike parade, ice cream social and Maine Bike Expo. The weekend price includes camping, food such as big breakfasts, picnic lunches and all-you-can-eat dinner, all rides, entertainment and a Maine Bike Rally T-shirt. Maine Celtic Celebration will be held July 19 through 22 in Belfast. The Maine Celtic Celebration is committed to renewing the rich Celtic history, culture and hospitality found along the coast of Maine. Planned events will take place along the waterfront in scenic Belfast and in various other places around the town and general Midcoast area. Expect live Celtic music, storytelling and dance; sporting events with Highland Games and a rugby scrum, and contests such as a "Celtic Iron Chef," Men in Kilts, Cheese Roll and a kilted run and row. Plans are in place for a children's area, events of interest to seniors, history, arts, literary experiences, a parade, Piping in the Park and much more. Old York Garden Club's "16 Sundays in the Garden" continues July 8 at the home of Pam Trafton at 20 Hutchins Lane in Cape Neddick where gardening is tuned to the cycle of the seasons. Everything old is new again. About 800 annual plants are started from seed each year in a little greenhouse. It's a joy to be able to start the seeds early in the season and watch them grow into beautiful plants. The garden changes every year. The casual garden is a mix of annuals and perennials with a lovely backdrop of ledges. From Route 1 North, turn left directly before the Cat-N-Nine Tail Country Store onto Hutchins Lane. Go one quarter of a mile over the bridge and stay left to the second house. The tours are Sunday afternoons from noon to 4 p.m. through Sept. 9. The fee is $3 per garden, payable at the door of the individual garden on the day of the tour, and all proceeds benefit the club's various civic development projects.

Summer Otter Trek: York River Kayak Trip will be held on July 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join the York Land Trust on the incoming tide for a paddle into the upper reaches of the York River for an otter's eye view. Nature columnist Sue Pike will help us spot otter signs along the river. Bring snacks to enjoy on the riverbank while taking in the spectacular views. Be prepared for three hours of moderate paddling on flat water, with a short break. Limited to 20 registrants. Call 363-7400.

Water Works Park. Calling all kids from pre-school through elementary school to come have some wet fun at Vacation Bible School's Water Works Park! EXHIBITS, MUSIC, THEATRE AND MORE

Artist Gallery Talks. The George Marshall Store Gallery will present two gallery talks by the four artists currently exhibiting their work in the week ahead. Portland artists Jeff Kellar and Judy LaBrasca will speak about their work from concept to process on July 8 at 3 p.m. Painters Peter Brown and Robin Cody will talk about their work on July 11 at 3 p.m., which is the final day of their exhibition. Coastal Brass, a classical brass ensemble, will present a free concert of patriotic favorites in the gazebo at the Colony Hotel in Kennebunk on July 4, at 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend at no charge. FMI: 985-4748 or coastalbrass@verizon.net.

Free Sunday Concerts at the Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport will be given in the main hotel ballroom beginning July 8 when Leslie Giammanco, opera diva from Broadway's "The Phantom of the Opera," will perform her New York City cabaret program, "Heart's Desire," at 4 p.m. Currently on the voice faculty at Adelphi University, Giammanco maintains private vocal studios in Wells and New York City. Accompanying her July 8 will be David Lahm, with 27 years' experience as musical director and arranger in cabaret and concert venues. On July 15, the popular duo Top-Hatz will perform from 5 to 6 p.m. Top-Hatz brings together Warren King, professionally trained pianist with over 30 years of experience, and highly-polished trumpet player Guy Riendeau, performing the best music of the 1920s to 1960s. Laudholm Trust's Seventh Annual Painterly Day and Fresh Paint Auction will be held on July 15. A total of 90 artists will paint pastoral landscapes, historic buildings and quintessential Maine beach and marsh scenes. Their works later hang in the magnificent Laudholm barn for silent and live auctions. The public is invited to watch artists at work during the day. Admission to the site is $1 for ages 6 to 16, $2 for those over 16 and free for members of Laudholm Trust. FMI 646-4521.

The Music Hall presents "A Celebration of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" on July 20 at 10:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now, and the late evening festivities include wizard games, costume contests, a dramatic reading and other magical surprises staged in the historic Victorian theatre. Tickets go on sale for more than 40 performances in the upcoming season beginning July 14 at noon. Shaolin Warriors, Joshua Bell and Holiday Pops are among the most popular shows. The Music Hall is in the midst of SummerFilm, which runs through Aug. 1, when it will close for the month of August as restoration work continues on the interior of the theatre. The theatre will reopen on Sept. 8 with a gala that will unveil the newly restored auditorium. Portofino Prelude. The public is invited to hear classical and popular songs of Italy, free of charge, on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Colony Hotel on Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport, free. The concert series is designed to set the mood for the popular Portofino Buffet, which begins at 6 p.m. on summer Wednesdays in the hotel's porch restaurant. On July 11, highly regarded tenor John Manzo, accompanied by accomplished pianist Warren King, will present operatic selections, art songs and popular numbers. Manzo and King have been well received at the annual L'Opera per Vigilia Anno Nuovo, and will reprise some of the favorite arias from that program, as well as more familiar Italian songs. "Portraits from the Edge of the World," a photography exhibit by Charles Carpenter, is on display in USM's Glickman Family Library in the seventh floor UNUM Great Reading Room and on the library's fifth floor. Submit Artwork for Title: Tidal, the final exhibition of the summer to be presented at Heartwood College of Art, through July 18. Summer Green, the Heartwood College of Art faculty exhibition, will begin with an opening reception with free root beer floats, complements of Shipyard Brewing Co. of Portland, Federal Jack's Restaurant in Kennebunk and Big Daddy's Ice Cream in Wells at the college on July 11 at 4:30 p.m. Heartwood is located at 123 York St., Route 1 South, in Kennebunk. Wax at Whitney Art Works continues through July 21 with an artist reception on July 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. An exhibition continuing from July 25 to Sept. 1 features 11 artists who work in wax, but push its artistic limits beyond its common identity as a sticky sibling to oil. GRANTS

The Maine Community Foundation seeks applications for the 2007 Noyce Award for Nonprofit Excellence. This year's award, which includes a $10,000 unrestricted grant, will honor a Maine nonprofit that engages local people in economic development planning and implementation, building on and preserving the special character and quality of life that typifies many Maine communities. This year's focus acknowledges the importance of promoting sustainable prosperity and quality places as reflected in the report "Charting Maine's Future" released by GrowSmart Maine in 2006. Safe Boating Courses will be offered by the Saco Bay Flotilla of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. "Suddenly in Command" is for people who are usually passengers on boats. If the primary boat operator is incapacitated would you know how to get help and return to safety? A two-lesson class will be presented July 18 and 19 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and the fee is $45. "How to Read a Nautical Chart" will be held July 25 and 26 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Charts contain a wealth of information, but you need to know how to properly read and interpret them. Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women, a nationally known non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to assist victims of intimate partner violence. Volunteers are needed to cover the organization's toll-free crisis line and ull training is offered. You may answer calls right from your home on weekdays, nights, weekends and/or holidays. The training is 40 hours and will consist of online and teleconferencing sessions. Volunteers must have access to a computer with an Internet connection. Home Schooling Club a la Carte offers a chance to meet, socialize, have fun and take field trips with others from the community who home school just like you! Boy's Club for all boys ages 8 and up where it's all about being a boy. Hang out, play video and computer games, build stuff, run remote-controlled vehicles, play games, enjoy outdoor activities and have tons of fun. On July 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. it will be Mt. A. Day lots of outside fresh air fun for everyone with nature hikes, wildlife tracking, bird watching and all the natural beauty this precious resource has to offer. The International Women's Club of New England (IWCNE) meets for lunch on the fourth Saturday of every month with an international speaker. The Southern Maine Agency on Aging facilitates a monthly support group for people assisting older adult loved ones. Unpaid family and friends who are helping spouses, parents, siblings and friends are invited to come and talk about the challenges and rewards of care-giving with other people in similar situations. HEALTH

Know Your Numbers is a cholesterol screening offered by SMMC Visiting Nurses on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. An appointment is necessary and there is a $15 fee for this service. FMI: 985-1000.

PUBLIC MEALS

Coffee Shop at the Wells-Ogunquit Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 to 11 a.m., serving regular or decaf coffee, pastries, Congdon's and Dunkin' Donuts, and their own blueberry muffins for $1.50. Thursday's Coffee Club occasionally has a guest speaker.

SUPPORT

A Safe Place, a non-profit agency, has been providing support services and emergency shelter to victims of domestic abuse for over 28 years. A Safe Place has offices in Portsmouth, Rochester and Salem, N.H. FMI or to reach an advocate call 1-(800) 854-3552.

Hospice of York's Living with Loss is a bereavement support group offered free of charge, and you need not have had a loved one serviced by Hospice. Hospice of York encourages pre-registration; however, you may attend any or all of the classes as you see fit. Sessions are held seasonally on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the basement conference room of Medical Office Building 16 on the grounds of York Hospital. FMI: call 363-7000.

The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group, which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Those who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.
