OGUNQUIT - This Friday, July 6, the rockets' red glare will once again be lighting the night sky above Ogunquit Beach.
After a two-year hiatus, Ogunquit's Fourth of July fireworks display will be launched from a barge in the ocean off Main Beach.
DJ Jerry Bazata will also be on hand to provide music and entertainment in the Main Beach parking lot, which will be closed for the event.
The show begins at 9:30 p.m. and can be viewed from areas in Perkins Cove, as well as from Marginal Way, Moody Beach the Main Beach and the Main Beach parking lot.
The public will not be allowed on the stretch of Ogunquit Beach north of the Norseman Resort - to and including the Footbridge - to protect the piping plover nests on that section of the beach. Concerns for the nests caused the town's annual display to be canceled for two years.
Parking will be available at the Footbridge parking lot, although no access to the beach will be permitted.
Trolleys will provide transportation for $1.50 per ride and will run until midnight.
It is suggested for safety that spectators carry flashlights for use in exiting the viewing areas.
The display is made possible by the work of the Village Spirit Committee, which raised money and worked with local and state officials in their mission to "bring safe, fun and entertaining events to the town of Ogunquit."
The event is entirely financed by contributions. Anyone interested in supporting this and other such events may send donations to The Village Spirit Committee, P.O. Box 684, Ogunquit, ME 03907.
The rain date is July 7.
