Annual Fair at Union Congregational Church in York Beach will be held on July 14 at 8:30 a.m. Besides an impressive selection of quality handmade items, there will be food and white elephant tables. The Common Ground Fair in Unity is the destination for the York County Retired Educators Association on Sept. 22. Sign up now! There are no midways, fast food, or games of chance. Instead, hundreds of activities take place on the grounds, in the gardens or farmyard as well as several exhibition halls, all celebrating rural, sustainable living - including livestock demonstrations and many animals on display as well as folk art, crafts and a farmer's market. More than 150 talks and demonstrations are given in the three days of the fair. Be picked up from Sweetser on the Route 1 Bypass in Kittery at 7:30 a.m., the Meadowbrook Plaza in York at 7:45 a.m., or the Biddeford Park and Ride, Biddeford, at 8:30 a.m., and the group will be back around 5:30 p.m. Cost is $40 and includes transportation and admission to the fair. Dragonflies and Damselflies: Odes to Joy will be presented on July 14 from 10 a.m. to noon. Join the York County Audubon Society, Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve and the York Land Trust for a field trip led by Sue Bickford to study dragonflies and damselflies. Meet at the YLT office for a short presentation and then visit a YLT property to observe them up close. The rain date is July 15. Call 363-7400 to register.
If You Can't Hide It, Decorate It with Mario Buatta will be held on July 23 as part of the OYHS Lecture Series. This evening reception will feature Buatta, an internationally renowned interior designer who will be giving an informal lecture and slideshow featuring houses he has decorated for Barbara Walters, Malcolm Forbes, Henry Ford II, Mariah Carey and Billy Joel, as well as The White House guest house, Blair House, in Washington, D.C., and others. His talk will be informative and include amusing anecdotes about his experiences relating to his profession. We are pleased and honored to present this program, which will be held at the York Golf and Tennis Old Clubhouse on Organug Road with cocktail hour with a cash bar from 5 to 6 p.m. and the lecture to follow at 6 p.m. The $50 admission includes the lecture, hors d' oeuvres and a Show House admission. Maine Celtic Celebration will be held July 19 through 22 in Belfast. The Maine Celtic Celebration is committed to renewing the rich Celtic history, culture and hospitality found along the coast of Maine. Planned events will take place along the waterfront in scenic Belfast and in various other places around the town and general Midcoast area. Expect live Celtic music, storytelling and dance; sporting events with Highland Games and a rugby scrum, and contests such as a "Celtic Iron Chef," Men in Kilts, Cheese Roll and a kilted run and row. Plans are in place for a children's area, events of interest to seniors, history, arts, literary experiences, a parade, Piping in the Park and much more. Old York Garden Club's "16 Sundays in the Garden" continues July 15 at the home of Charlotte Hefford at 2 Tide Meadow Lane, where the focus of this backyard garden is a gradual, raised round-rock garden planted in four divisions with perennials, annuals and herbs, with young flowering shrubs around the deck. Take Route 1 to Route 91 and go 1.5 miles. Take a left into "Tide Meadows" at the large sign and keep to the right. Number 2 is the first house on the left, a red cape. The tours are Sunday afternoons from noon to 4 p.m. through Sept. 9. The fee is $3 per garden, payable at the door of the individual garden on the day of the tour, and all proceeds benefit the club's various civic development projects.
OYHS Decorator Show House Lecture Series will feature "Silver in the Golden Age" with Barbara McLean Ward, Ph.D., director and curator of the Moffatt-Ladd House and Garden in Portsmouth, N.H., on July 25 sharing a slideshow and presentation on the prevailing taste in American silver between 1860 and 1930. McLean will discuss the success of the silver industry during this time period and show examples of work by H. Blanchard Dominick, who built this year's Show House, Mayfair, in 1903, as well as Reed & Barton, Gorham and Tiffany. The event will be held at the Stage Neck Inn at 11:30 a.m. The $45 admission includes the lecture and lunch as well as a Show House tour. FMI: 363-4974.
Roast Turkey Dinner at the Union Congregational Church on Church Street in York Beach will be offered July 12 at 5:30 p.m. The price is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 10 and under. There will be only one seating; therefore, arrival before 5:30 p.m. will be appreciated. The food will be deliciously prepared and if you invite your friends they will thank you that you did! Summer Otter Trek: York River Kayak Trip will be held on July 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join the York Land Trust on the incoming tide for a paddle into the upper reaches of the York River for an otter's eye view. Nature columnist Sue Pike will help us spot otter signs along the river. Bring snacks to enjoy on the riverbank while taking in the spectacular views. Be prepared for three hours of moderate paddling on flat water, with a short break. Limited to 20 registrants. Call 363-7400.
Union Congregational Church Annual Auction. It's July, and the Union Congregational Church in York Beach will once again host its annual summer auction on July 21. All members of the community and summer visitors are invited to attend this popular event where new, like-new and antique items, as well as baked goods, handcrafted items and gift certificates, will be offered for sale to the highest bidder. The auction preview will begin at 8 a.m. at the church on Church Street, and commencing at 9 a.m., items will be presented for bidding. During the event, breakfast sandwiches and coffee will be available. Plan to be a part of this festive event where high-quality items result in fantastic bargains.
Water Works Park. Calling all kids from pre-school through elementary school to come have some wet fun at Vacation Bible School's Water Works Park! The York Public Library Annual Book Sale will be held July 19 through 21. July 19 is Preview Night from 5 to 7 p.m. with $5 admission. The sale continues July 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and July 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with free admission. Books galore, along with CDs, DVDs, audiobooks and puzzles! EXHIBITS, MUSIC, THEATRE AND MORE
Free Sunday Concerts at the Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport will be given in the main hotel ballroom including, on July 15, the popular duo Top-Hatz from 5 to 6 p.m. Top-Hatz brings together Warren King, professionally trained pianist with over 30 years of experience, and highly-polished trumpet player Guy Riendeau, performing the best music of the 1920s to 1960s. On July 22, professional flutist Krysia Tripp will be accompanied by Warren King, playing classical and modern selections from 5 to 6 p.m. On July 29, the popular Breakwater Wind Ensemble of Kennebunk, accompanied by Warren King, will be playing classical and Celtic favorites from 5 to 6 p.m. Instrumentalists include Nancy Gerber and Denise Butler on flute and Chris Elbrader playing bassoon. Laudholm Trust's Seventh Annual Painterly Day and Fresh Paint Auction will be held on July 15. A total of 90 artists will paint pastoral landscapes, historic buildings and quintessential Maine beach and marsh scenes. Their works later hang in the magnificent Laudholm barn for silent and live auctions. The public is invited to watch artists at work during the day. The Music Hall presents "A Celebration of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" on July 20 at 10:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now, and the late evening festivities include wizard games, costume contests, a dramatic reading and other magical surprises staged in the historic Victorian theatre. Tickets go on sale for more than 40 performances in the upcoming season beginning July 14 at noon. Shaolin Warriors, Joshua Bell and Holiday Pops are among the most popular shows. The Music Hall is in the midst of SummerFilm, which runs through Aug. 1, when it will close for the month of August as restoration work continues on the interior of the theatre. The theatre will reopen on Sept. 8 with a gala that will unveil the newly restored auditorium. Opera Night at the Wells Public Library will be held July 18 at 6:30 p.m., featuring a variety of well-known - and some lesser-known - arias accompanied by Warren King. The evening's talented soloists will be Cathryn Hammond, soprano; Bruce Canterbury, baritone, and Rhee Michelle, soprano. Portofino Prelude. The public is invited to hear classical and popular songs of Italy, free of charge, on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Colony Hotel on Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport, free. The concert series is designed to set the mood for the popular Portofino Buffet, which begins at 6 p.m. on summer Wednesdays in the hotel's porch restaurant. On July 11, highly regarded tenor John Manzo, accompanied by accomplished pianist Warren King, will present operatic selections, art songs and popular numbers. Manzo and King have been well received at the annual L'Opera per Vigilia Anno Nuovo, and will reprise some of the favorite arias from that program, as well as more familiar Italian songs. "Portraits from the Edge of the World," a photography exhibit by Charles Carpenter, is on display in USM's Glickman Family Library in the seventh floor UNUM Great Reading Room and on the library's fifth floor. GRANTS
The Maine Community Foundation seeks applications for the 2007 Noyce Award for Nonprofit Excellence. This year's award, which includes a $10,000 unrestricted grant, will honor a Maine nonprofit that engages local people in economic development planning and implementation, building on and preserving the special character and quality of life that typifies many Maine communities. This year's focus acknowledges the importance of promoting sustainable prosperity and quality places as reflected in the report "Charting Maine's Future" released by GrowSmart Maine in 2006. "How to Read a Nautical Chart" will be held July 25 and 26 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Charts contain a wealth of information, but you need to know how to properly read and interpret them. Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women, a nationally known non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to assist victims of intimate partner violence. Volunteers are needed to cover the organization's toll-free crisis line and ull training is offered. You may answer calls right from your home on weekdays, nights, weekends and/or holidays. The training is 40 hours and will consist of online and teleconferencing sessions. Volunteers must have access to a computer with an Internet connection. Home Schooling Club a la Carte offers a chance to meet, socialize, have fun and take field trips with others from the community who home school just like you! Boy's Club for all boys ages 8 and up where it's all about being a boy. The Southern Maine Agency on Aging facilitates a monthly support group for people assisting older adult loved ones. Coffee Shop at the Wells-Ogunquit Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 to 11 a.m., serving regular or decaf coffee, pastries, Congdon's and Dunkin' Donuts, and their own blueberry muffins for $1.50. Thursday's Coffee Club occasionally has a guest speaker.
SUPPORT
A Safe Place, a non-profit agency, has been providing support services and emergency shelter to victims of domestic abuse for over 28 years. A Safe Place has offices in Portsmouth, Rochester and Salem, N.H. FMI or to reach an advocate call 1-(800) 854-3552.
Hospice of York's Living with Loss is a bereavement support group offered free of charge, and you need not have had a loved one serviced by Hospice. Hospice of York encourages pre-registration; however, you may attend any or all of the classes as you see fit. Sessions are held seasonally on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the basement conference room of Medical Office Building 16 on the grounds of York Hospital. FMI: call 363-7000.
The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group, which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Those who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.

The Melanoma Education Foundation is seeking Maine volunteers to help raise melanoma awareness. Volunteers should preferably have two or more weekdays per month available and be willing to plan and organize fundraising events in their area in memory of a loved one or friend whose life was lost to melanoma. Examples of fundraisers are races, raffles, dinners, and auctions. Stephen Fine of Peabody, Mass., started the foundation after his son Daniel died of the disease in 1998 at age 26. The organization specializes in training wellness teachers and nurses about skin cancer and providing them with free materials to teach the subject to high school and middle school students in a single-class session. The MEF SkinCheck® curriculum is being used in more than 500 middle and high schools in New England, including 48 schools in Maine. By having a health teacher view a training video, schools become qualified to teach the SkinCheck® class to their students and receive a lesson plan, student video, early detection bookmarks for their students, and a teacher resource CD.
