Currents in Education

A GARDEN OF GIVING. At its 75th Anniversary Luncheon last month, the Old York Garden Club awarded its $2,000 Marion Prince Hosmer Scholarship to local resident Virginia Lee, the oldest child of Mike and Martha Leighton Lee and niece of OYGC member Beth Furlong. It has been many years since the club awarded the scholarship to a local student as the criteria for the scholarship include residence in the Piscataqua Garden Club District of Eliot, Kennebunk, Kittery, Sanford and York, good academic standing as an upperclassman or graduate student, and a major in a horticulture-related program. Virginia Lee, seen here with OYGC Scholarship Chairwoman Mary Jane Merrill, is a second-year student at the University of New England. Also at the June event, other donations totaling $1000 were made to the York Education Foundation, Old York Historical Society youth programming and the Maine Garden Club Federation Scholarship. The applications have been all been reviewed, and in its third year of making funds available for outstanding projects proposed by local educators, the York Education Foundation has awarded $21,583 for programs in the school year ahead.
