Ongoing and upcoming events at the library
YORK VILLAGE - Summer events at the York Public Library provide plenty to do on rainy days and sunny days alike.
SUMMER FAMILY FUN SERIES
The Summer Family Fun Series, co-sponsored by the York Public Library, Kennebunk Savings Bank and York Recreation Department, features exciting programs for all ages. On July 12 at 10:30 a.m., Jan Zimmermann, a musician and storyteller who has been enchanting audiences up and down the Maine coast, will bring tales of mystery to the library. On Thursday, Aug. 9, at 10:30 a.m., Dennis Labbe, a practicing magician since the age of seven, will present an exciting and magical experience for children and families.
GET A CLUE SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Wednesday Morning Movie Mystery films begin at 10:30 a.m. and include "Harriet the Spy" on July 11, "The Great Mouse Detective" on July 25, "Escape to Witch Mountain" on Aug. 1, "The Secret of Roan Inish" on Aug. 8, "The Secret Garden" on Aug. 15 and "Hoodwinked" on Aug. 22.
"Harry Potter" will return to the library on July 19, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., when York's own Juanita Reed, also known as The Party Mom, will present a party in honor of the publication of the last Harry Potter book. Register with Kathleen at the library at 363-2818. This program will be limited to 20 children, and the library staff asks that those who have come to previous Harry Potter parties let other children have a chance to register first.
"Clue in on Thursdays" from 10:15 to 11 a.m. when Julie Eneman leads the discussions in this mystery book group for children. Books include "A to Z Mysteries - Detective Camp" for grades 2 through 5 on July 26; "The Secret of the Old Clock" for grades 3 through 5 on Aug. 2, and "Chasing Vermeer" for grades 3 through 5 on Aug. 15. Registration is required.
ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the York Public Library Association will be held on Thursday, July 12. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and all members of the association are encouraged to attend.
SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
The "Sunday Night at the Movies" series continues through Sept. 9 with showings at 7 p.m. The next film in the series is "Riding Giants" on July 15. Then, on July 22, enjoy the 2007 Oscar winner for best animated film, "Happy Feet." Extraordinary computer graphics distinguish this film, directed by George Miller of "Babe" fame, which follows the adventures of Mumbles, a misfit tap-dancing penguin, who cannot sing the requisite penguin heartsong. Ostracized for his nonconformity, Mumbles sets out to find the cause of the lack of fish that is threatening the penguin community. This film is Rated PG and has a running time of 109 minutes.
THE BOOK SALE
Preview Night will be Thursday, July 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. with $5 admission for the best selection. The sale continues with free admission on July 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and July 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
COFFEEHOUSE CONCERT
On Sunday July 29, come to another live Library Coffeehouse Concert from 4 to 6 p.m. featuring Mom's Home Cookin', Mainesqueeze, Curt Bessette and Neal Zweig and others.
ART AT THE LIBRARY
Den Nichols's photographs of rural China will be on display in the Kennebunk Room during the month of July. Den recently spent the first five months of his high school junior year studying at the Beijing Normal University High School #2.
Richard Brown Lethem's paintings remain on view at the library through Aug. 1.
PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN
The library will continue to offer Infant Lapsits on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. in the Children's Room with stories, finger plays and rhymes for children up to the age of 2 through the summer. Summer Preschool Story Time for ages 6 and under will be on Friday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Good Nights Bedtime Stories at the York Public Library will be offered on Wednesday evenings in August from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Children may come to the library in pajamas for quiet stories on summer nights.
CUBA THROUGH ITS LITERATURE
"So Near and So Far: Cuba through its Literature," is funded by a grant from the Maine Humanities Council. This "Let's Talk About It" book discussion series continues July 12 and 26 and Aug. 9 and 23. The series is now filled.
