A PIECE OF HISTORY FOR SALE. Cape Neddick’s renowned Cragmere estate is now being offered for sale exclusively by Anne Erwin Sotheby’s International Realty at $4.395 million. Cragmere was designed by architect Antoine Dorticos in 1895, and built as a summer cottage for the prominent Connarroe family. Completely restored in 1997, current owners Chris and Liz Crane succeeded in maintaining the historical integrity of the home while incorporating modern conveniences. In 1999, Cragmere received the Maine Preservation Award presented by Gov. Angus King. The estate’s renovations include 10 steel beams for stability as well as new plumbing, electrical, heating and septic systems, just to name a few. Cragmere served as the Old York Historical Society’s third Decorator Show House in 1992, was featured in a kitchen tour in 2004 and was one of five Shore Road properties included in the recent Garden Conservancy Tour. Eileen Roberts, owner of Anne Erwin Sotheby’s International Realty, described Cragmere as “an exceptional property. The setting and the home itself create an unparalleled combination. We are absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to represent this unique property.” For more about Cragmere, visit www.AnneErwin.com. Courtesy photo
When Army Capt. Sean McQuade stood in the deserted guesthouse of a key leader of insurgent forces in Afghanistan, he never expected he would find a small hardcover book that was once the property of his elementary school. It has been 20 years since a lighthouse keeper’s family lived within the charming 19th-century cottage attached to the town’s beloved Nubble Lighthouse. When Mike St. Laurent and his wife, Linda, were planning the first Maine Coast Half-Marathon, to be held here in town on Sept. 23 as the only all women’s race of its kind in New England, Linda had an idea. It was a busy evening for the Board of Selectmen as announcements of resignations from two longtime staff members and the appointment of Town Planner Steve Burns as the town’s new Director of Community Development were followed by a long talk about growth. School Department officials will be following the state’s directive in the new school consolidation law to begin discussions with Kittery and will meet with that town’s school officials this week, but will also be looking to other options during talks with the Wells-Ogunquit school district. The members of Pantanal Team 9 were not at home watching fireworks on Independence Day. Uncertainty about the location of available land has been a challenge for members of the Affordable and Workforce Housing Committee as they put the finishing touches on a plan for a pilot workforce housing project. What a transformation! While Mayfair will open for regular public tours from July 14 to Aug. 11, you have the chance to be a part of an evening like no other before the Show House opens while helping to raise funds for a worthy cause.
