Obituary

William James Hogan

YORK - Wm. James Hogan of Barrell Lane died suddenly on the morning of July 12, 2007, at the age of 71.

He was born in Lowell, Mass., son of William P. and Rita (Ducharme) Hogan. After graduating from St. Joseph's High School in 1953, he served four years in the United States Air Force and was a recipient of a Good Conduct Medal and an award for Outstanding Unit.

On Sept. 6, 1958, he married Gail D. Wennberg of Portsmouth, N.H. They soon made their home in York, where they raised their family.

As a young man Jim often held consecutive jobs, working days, nights and weekends to support his family. After over 30 years of service, he retired as a supervisor in the Engineering & Planning Department at the Portsmouth Navel Shipyard in Kittery.

He devoted many years to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association from its founding, becoming an EMT, assistant crew chief and crew chief. During this time he was also a Red Cross volunteer and CPR instructor. After his retirement from the shipyard, he became a volunteer at York Hospital. He was soon hired as a clerk in the Emergency Room, a job he truly enjoyed.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Bonnie K. Britton, and great-grandson, Gregory M. Chartier.

He is survived by his beloved wife Gail of 49 years; his three children, Bethany and husband John Demopoulos of Wells; Kathleen (Dede) and husband Bill Britton of York, and Jim and wife Penny Hogan of York. He is also survived by a brother, Robert A. Hogan of Tyngsboro, Mass., and four sisters, Eileen and Anthony Pereira of Lowell, Mass., Gloria and husband Thomas Kirk of Tyngsboro, Mass., Carol and Clarence Lamphier of Deltona, Fla., and Linda and Gerald Driscoll of Dracut, Mass. He is missed by seven grandchildren, Ashley Hogan and Gregory Chartier, John and Matthew Demopoulos, Jackson and Chloe Britton, and Parker and Gus Hogan, and great-grandson, Dominick Chartier.

He was a man who went out of his way to help his friends and neighbors, his children and grandchildren. Every day revealed testament to the acts of kindness he performed without recognition. His sense of humor was quick and fine-tuned. His daily e-mails will be missed. We will spend our days remembering, with love and in hope that his example will echo throughout our lives.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Hogan was held on Monday, July 16, in St. Christopher's Church, York, with burial in First Parish Cemetery. Calling hours were held on Sunday in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Maine Medical Center, Maine Children's Cancer Program, 22 Bramhall St., Portland, ME 04102.
