OGUNQUIT - Now you can take it with you, even when you have to be away from this beautiful place by the sea.
As part of its fundraising activities, the Ogunquit Women's Club has created a tote bag featuring Ogunquit's famous landmark, the Perkins Cove Bridge. The bags are now available for $15 from club members or at Mike's Clam Shack Gift Shop in Wells, Spoiled Rotten on Beach Street, the Christmas Dove in Perkins Cove and Pine Tree Gardens in Wells.
The bags come in natural color and in light blue. They are 10 inches wide, 13 inches high and five inches deep with handles to either throw over the shoulder or dangle casually from the hand. They have been designed with room to accommodate, for example, file folders for a meeting, a picnic lunch for a day at the beach, all your baby's many needs or to consolidate purchased items from a shopping excursion.
The club uses funds raised through efforts like this and from donations to benefit local charities with emphasis on those that benefit children. For example, Diana Abbott works in local schools to fulfill special needs of individual children - such as the purchase of a second-hand instrument for a child who would like to join the band, dental work for a needy student, help for a family burned out of their home and awards to graduating seniors at Wells and York High Schools.
"It is the hope of the club that profits from the sale of these tote bags will enable them to continue and expand these programs," according to an announcement from the Ogunquit Women's Club.
The club is also holding a raffle for the original art used for the bags.
The rendering of the bridge was done by internationally known artist - and local resident - Norman West, who generously donated the artwork for use on the bags.
Raffle tickets are $1 each or seven for $5 and are available by contacting Ryna Lipkind at P.O. Box 1562, Ogunquit, ME 03907 or 646-6943. The drawing will be held Columbus Day Weekend and the winner does not need to be present for the event.
West is a graduate of the Portland School of Art and Plymouth State College in New Hampshire, is a member of the Ogunquit Art Association and is known as a colorist. He has been quoted as saying he believes art is created "through feeling and observation."
West's artwork is held in both public and private collections in North America, Europe and Hong Kong with artwork exhibited at the Barn Gallery in Ogunquit as well as Sardegna, Italy, and Galleria Clemente, Florence, Italy.
