As the York Police Department marks another year in a station that was called a temporary solution when the department first moved there in 1981, its chief is also searching for ways to accommodate state-mandated weapons training for the 27 full-time and dozen part-time officers who have no access to a shooting range in the local area for target practice. When it comes to how, and with whom, to consolidate local schools, the discussions are now underway. During a marathon meeting last Thursday, July 12, a mix of seasoned and new Planning Board members tackled a full agenda of high-profile projects, including a Rite Aid coming to Route 1 and a first-ever Zacharias Farm barbecue festival. Although the start of the next academic year may still seem a long way away, local school officials are in the midst of planning for the beginning of school in September. Although the Appeals Board voted 5-0 to deny an appeal made by David Bridges, owner of Coastal Landscaping & Garden Center, 941 Route 1, they agreed with Bridges that enforcement of signs of Route 1 businesses should not be selective. Once again this year, breast cancer survivors and their family members and friends are invited to gather at Short Sands Beach to walk together to help raise funds and awareness of breast cancer causes across the state. Local resident Beth Boynton spent 20 years in nursing, minored in theatre and communications in college and eventually earned a Master’s degree in organizational development.

A July 11 feature on The 2007 OYHS Decorator Show House described the work of "landscape designer" Jacquelyn Nooney of JNL, Inc., of Eliot, in the design of the entry porch and veranda of Mayfair. The landscaping of the property itself, however, was provided by Tom Dunn and Jen Spencer of Stoney Brook Landscaping of York.

An early morning, high-speed pursuit on Saturday, July 14, which began in York Beach, came to an end on Logging Road when the suspect tried to turn around but made contact with a police cruiser and dumped his motorcycle on the ground. York Police Reserve Officer Wayne Clark’s school French lessons were put to the test when a lost 10-year-old French-Canadian girl, who spoke no English, was found walking down Route 1 alone last Wednesday afternoon.
