EVENTS

The Costume Parade and Halloween Hop will be hosted by York Parks and Recreation on Oct. 26. This free event will begin with lineup for the Costume Parade to depart at 4:30 p.m. from Town Hall. The Parade will travel down York Street to Village Elementary School where there will be a Halloween Hop with DJ Side Traxx at 5 p.m. There will also be snacks and a costume contest. This event is sure to have something for everyone in the family. Start planning those costumes now and be sure to join us!

Extended Teacher Education Program Information Sessions will be offered by the University of Southern Maine. Faculty members, current interns in the program, a graduate admission representative and an advisor will all be present.  Information sessions will consist of a presentation by faculty and staff followed by a question-and-answer session. Participants will receive a packet of materials about ETEP, Graduate Admissions information and Financial Aid information. Owl Prowls will be offered in the weeks ahead at the Wells Reserve. On Nov. 1 from 8 to 10 p.m., Paul Dest will talk about the owls of Maine, and then you'll have a chance to visit the onsite Saw-whet owl banding activity of York County Audubon Society. Perhaps they will have an owl, perhaps not, but the banding crew will talk about the international project to discover owl migration habits. The evening finishes with an owl prowl in the woods. Then, on Dec. 21 from 4:30 a.m. onward, Paul Dest will lead a moonlit morning owl prowl. The local owls are often active before dawn at this time of year, but they also can be elusive. Pumpkin Patch at Eliot's Tidewater School continues through Oct. 31. Once again the Tidewater School has received a truckload of pumpkins grown on a Navajo Indian Reservation in northwest New Mexico. Pumpkins are available daily from 8 a.m. until dark through Halloween and the proceeds from the sale of the pumpkins, along with the sale of gourds, Indian corn, corn stalks and other decorative items, will benefit both the Navajo and the Tidewater School. A Dark Frolic, a Halloween-inspired art show at ellO Gallery, will open Oct. 26. Fluid Fitness, a new adult water aerobics program, is a fun-filled class being offered by the York Recreation Department. Look Good Feel Better Program is being offered in York by the American Cancer Society. SMMC Screening Days for Women to promote breast cancer awareness will be held on Oct. 24 in Kennebunk, Nov. 1 in Saco and Buxton and Nov. 3 in Biddeford. At each Screening Day women will be provided with a clinical exam by a female nurse practitioner, a pap test and a mammogram, all at no cost and all at the same appointment. All women pre-registering for the Screening Day will be enrolled in the Breast & Cervical Health Program (BCHP). The women then can have a clinical exam and mammogram each year, as long as they continue to meet the income and insurance criteria. All screening tests and medical exams will be provided at no cost to women who are between the ages of 30* and 64; have no insurance, or have insurance with a high deductible or which does not cover the cost of the tests, and meet certain income guidelines. *Women in their 30s must be at high risk of breast cancer to be eligible. YMCA Classes are now bring offered. Walk-to-Run class begins Oct. 24. Taught by world class runner Jeff Cullinane, this seven-week class meets Wednesdays from noon to 12:45 p.m. Jeff will address training, nutrition, running strides, stretching and more. Hospice of York's Living with Loss is a bereavement support group offered free of charge, and you need not have had a loved one serviced by Hospice. The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group, which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Those who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too.
