THE DOGS
Blue Boy
Blue BoyI can't wait for winner! I don't think I've ever seen snow before! My name is Blue Boy and I am a transfer dog from Louisiana. I am a three-and-a-half-year-old Husky. A Husky in Louisiana? Well, I finally made my way North and I am looking for a family who is looking for me. I started shelter dog obedience class Thursdays with one of the volunteers. I need my new family to continue my obedience education because I do not appear to have had any previous training. I also need a family who will continue to work with me on housetraining. I have been out of a home setting for so long that my new family will need to give me a routine to follow to reinforce my housetraining skills. Unfortunately, I cannot live with cats as I may chase to harm them. I get along with most dogs. If you have a dog already, bring him or her to the shelter and the staff can introduce us. I am a great dog who is looking to find a home for all four seasons, but I am especially looking forward to winter!
Redman
RedmanBeautiful, sparkling baby blues are what they tell me you'll see when meeting me. I'm Redman, a handsome boy looking to find his forever home with a family that enjoys being active and appreciates the fun of outdoor activities. I am a three-and-a-half-year-old Husky and would love jogging, hiking or perhaps a visit to the dog park. Obedience classes for my new owners and me would be great. I am excited to learn new tricks and sharpen my good manners. A bit on the shy side when meeting new people or having a big commotion around me, I would like to live with children who are respectful and can help me feel comfortable. Residing here with my brother, Blue Boy, I seem to do well with gentle and relaxed fellow canines. Cats and small animals are too much for me to handle, so the AWS staff is not asking me to live with them. They say I'm a wonderful dog, with a goofy but very lovable personality, sure to bring the right family many years of delight!
Dixie
DixieHi, I'm Dixie, and I am a two-year-old female pitbull terrier with a sweet disposition. I was found as a stray in one of the shelter's contract towns. I am a very excitable dog, but I am also easy to handle. When I walk on a leash I tend to be at one end while you are at the other, so helping me learn to walk on a leash would benefit us both. I prefer older kids because I feel everyone in the household should help me with my training. I am okay with dogs, but I show too much interest in cats. I have a lot of energy, so finding outlets for me to burn that energy is a great idea. Just come and visit me and you'll see what a great dog I am!
Sandra
Sandra Hi, I'm Sandra and I am a one-year-old female mixed breed. I prefer calm dogs to be around, but no cats. I can do well with any age children, but I just may knock small ones over when I am excited. I am currently an obedience student at AWS and my handler says that I am very smart and sweet and I can show you how well I respond to many basic commands. Although I may do well with some dogs, I'm really a people dog. I recently participated in the annual fashion show at The Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport and stole the show with my perky flaunty jaunt. Please consider me for your household. I'm truly one of a kind!
Peanut
PeanutHi, I'm Peanut and I am a one-year-old female pitbull mix. I have not yet been taught manners and how to act like the other dogs do, so crate training will really benefit me. I prefer rugged kids over 10 because I am a very active young girl and, as I am right now, I would be too much for younger kids. I can get along with some dogs, with a proper introduction, but no cats. I am very food motivated so that can aid you with my training. Please come visit me soon!
THE CATS
Gweneth
Gweneth A princess searching for her new palace, Gweneth is a four-year-old spayed female who lost her way. She was found as stray back in April and brought to the Animal Welfare Society where she stolen our hearts, as princesses are known to do. Gwen wants to end her wandering days and share her kingdom with a quiet, respectful family with perhaps another cat, but if there is a dog it must leave her to her feline ways. Visit with Gwen for a while at Nature's Gifts in Kennebunk and see if you might share your kingdom with this sweet beauty!
Jewel
Jewel Jewel is a four-year-old female dilute torti. Jewel was found as a stray in one of our contract towns and is truly a gem. Come visit her soon, and then just watch her sparkle and shine in her new household!
Jojo
Jojo Jojo is a two-year-old neutered male orange tabby. Jojo was found as a stray in one of our contract towns. You can't quite tell from the picture but Jojo has some scarring on the cornea of his left eye. He has been to the vet and his eye is as good as its going to get and he is healthy enough for adoption. It's a good thing he has a spare eye to see out of! Come meet this sweet boy soon.
OTHER PETS
Granite
Granite Granite is a four-year-old mixed-breed male rabbit. He is here at the shelter because his previous family lost interest in him. Because he has not been socialized like he should have been, he might not be best in a home with small children looking for a bunny to immediately cuddle, but if given the proper amount of attention and a little patience, he should blossom in a home where there is understanding. To learn more about having a rabbit as a family pet, please go to www.rabbit.org.
China, Vanilla and Flannel
China These three female rats are about four months old and are here because of a conflict among the animals in their previous home. Pet rats are much less fearful than their wild cousins, and when handled gently, they quickly learn to enjoy riding on their human friends' shoulders and napping in their laps. The average rat ranges from 14 to 18 inches long, including the seven-inch tail. These companion rodents come in a variety of coat types and colors, from curly and shiny to black, white and black-and-white. If well cared for, rats typically live from two and a half to three years. Curious, intelligent and always up for some fun, rats can be great pets for kids, but young caretakers should always be supervised by an adult.
If you are interested in adopting any of these animals or if you'd like to know who else is available for adoption, please visit the Animal Welfare Society at www.animalwelfaresociety.org or call us at 985-3244.
