Jesse Grant

YORK - Jessie R. Grant, 101, formerly of 61 Mill Road Lane, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, in the Harbor Home.

She was born Feb. 16, 1906, in Kilbirnie, Scotland, daughter of David and Janet (Barckley) White. She had worked as an operator for the Telephone Company and later for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. She was a member of the Beech Ridge Assembly of God and enjoyed rug hooking. Her husband, Arthur J. Grant, died in 1966.

She leaves two daughters, Janet L. Kyreages and her husband, Elias, of York Harbor, and Phyllis J. Stimpson and her husband, Ronald, of York; eight grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and nieces and nephews.

Her son, Arthur D. Grant, and a grandchild predeceased her.

The funeral service for Mrs. Grant was held Oct. 24 in the Beech Ridge Assembly of God with burial in the First Parish Cemetery, York.

Herman "Bud" Melhorn

YORK - Herman "Bud" C. Melhorn, Jr., 86, of 9 Chestnut Lane, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at home with his family by his side.

He was born May 22, 1921, in Kittery Point, son of Herman C. and Laura (Sawyer) Melhorn, Sr., and graduated from Traip Academy with the Class of 1939. Bud enlisted in the Navy shortly after the announcement of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, serving for 22 years before retiring in 1964. After retirement and after 10 years with the Civil Service, he and his wife owned and operated the Lakeview Inn Motor Lodge in Wolfeboro, N.H. He was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church, the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Palm Coast, Fla., the U.S. Navy League and the Fleet Reserve. He was a 60-year member of the Naval Lodge #184 A.F. & A. M. in Kittery and a 32-degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Portland, the Bektash Temple Shrine in Concord, N.H., the York Golf & Tennis Club and the Grand Club in Palm Coast, Fla.

His abiding trust in God was the underpinning of his strength. He was an avid sailor, spending as much time on the ocean as he could manage.

He is survived by his wife, his high school sweetheart whom he adored, Joan (Batchelder) Melhorn; two daughters, Natalie M. Kelloway and Carla M. Zwahlen, both of Wolfeboro, N.H.; three grandchildren, Jurg and wife, Lourinda Zwahlen, Stefan W. Zwahlen, Hilary and husband, Dennis McLaughlin; one step-granddaughter, Deborah and husband, Mark Allen; a great-grandson, Traugott J. Zwahlen; three step-great-grandchildren, Katherine, Aaron and Caroline Allen; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lucille Melhorn, as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. A brother, James Melhorn of Kittery, predeceased him.

Pauline Putney

MERRIMACK, N.H. - Pauline M. Putney, 81, of 297 Baboosic Lake Road, died unexpectedly, Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, at her beloved beach house in York Beach.

She was born Nov. 11, 1925, in Manchester, N.H., daughter of Frank E. and Margaret B. (Haley) Putney, Jr. She had worked for the Manchester Union Leader for over 40 years before retiring to enjoy more glorious days at the beach. Polly cherished her time with her loving family and many wonderful friends.

She leaves her sister and best friend, Helen P. Currie of Merrimack, N.H.; nine treasured nieces and nephews, Cyndy Dow, Lynda Ferland, David Currie, Scott Currie, Mark Putney, Sheryl Putney, Greg Putney, Lori Putney and Philip Putney, and 17 amazing grandnieces and nephews.

Polly's dearly loved brothers, Frank E. Putney and Philip H. S. Putney, predeceased her.
