Maine Backseat Driver Poster Contest is sponsored by the Maine DOT to encourage fourth-graders across the state to spread the word about work zone safety. Students are asked to design a poster with an accompanying slogan that encourages safe driving in work zones. In addition to the contest, teachers can download curriculum related to driving safety to help teach students about mapping, road signs and highway safety. During the past ten years, more than 7,000 work zone related crashes in the state of Maine have caused more than 3,400 injuries. The Backseat Driver contest is designed to teach students the dos and don'ts of driving safely in work zones - and to encourage them to be "backseat drivers" by reminding their parents to drive safely, too. Contest winners will share $2,400 in prize money for classroom activities, and the top 12 entries will be showcased in a new, full-color calendar to be distributed around the state. Call for Entries. The pieces may be small, but the artwork is sensational! Heartwood College of Art announces a call for entries for its much anticipated "Size Doesn't Matter" exhibition. The popular and powerful exhibition opens Feb. 18 and runs through March 28 with an opening reception on Feb. 20. All work will be for sale in the price range of $100-$500, with 70 percent of the proceeds given to the artist and 30 percent of the proceeds used to support Heartwood College of Art. Artists are invited to submit small work in any subject matter and in any medium except photography or computer generated images. Each piece should measure between 16 and 25 square inches (i.e., 5x5, 4.5x6, etc.) and be ready to hang. Traditional framing, including mat, must not exceed 11x14 inches. "Size Doesn't Matter" is a juried show with cash prizes. Entries in the form of slides, photos or digital files are due by Jan. 30 and artists will be notified by Feb. 4. There is an entry fee of $8 each for the first two slides or images or $20 for 3 to 5 images. Seeking Musicians. Pre-School Spanish for four- and five-year-olds is being offered by York Parks and Recreation. Introduce your child to the Spanish language through crafts, games, songs and stories.
