Richard Witham
YORK - Richard C. "Dick" Witham, 55, of Emus Way in York, died suddenly on Jan. 5, 2008, of natural causes at his home.
A native of Eliot, he was born in York Harbor on Oct. 29, 1952, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Justin Witham. He attended schools in Eliot and graduated from Marshwood High School.
Dick served his country as a member of the United States Navy after high school. In 1970 he returned to York where he built his home and his life. Dick embodied the Yankee characteristics of thrift, generosity and resourcefulness. He loved helping family and friends find the best way to fix or build something. Dick was a talented woodworker and mechanic; he fixed, fabricated and built nearly anything - particularly if it was related to boats. Dick had a wide group of friends who shared his many interests. Dick always gave much to all of his friends. He loved having his Dad and Patty back in Maine and played cribbage with his father most days.
The ocean was Dick's strongest passion. Dick loved being on the water. He enjoyed many years fishing for everything from giant blue fin tuna to spring mackerel. He was very talented in all things related to boats. His years as a charter boat captain brought him loyal clients from many states. He loved nothing better than getting fish for those onboard Linesider. Dick was an active member of the Northeast Charter Boat Captains Association. He also served York for many years on the York Harbor Board.
He enjoyed music and had a close association with the local Seacoast Blues musicians. Dick always had energy to go and hear and dance to local blues and jazz.
Dick is survived by his loving parents Justin and Patricia Witham; two stepsisters, Jynx Legan Hatchell and Helen Nelson; a niece, Holly Nelson, and special friends Suzanne W. Roux, Connie Hanley and Jim Smith, and Janet and Artie Swanson.
Friends were invited to visit with his family on Jan. 9 at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home with the funeral service held there on Jan. 10. Online condolences may be made at http://www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com/.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, 46 Holland Road, W. Kennebunk, ME 04043 or the Seacoast Concert for a Cure, 51 Durham Point Road, Durham, NH 03824.
