AUGUSTA - The Maine House of Representatives has honored York Beach Fire Capt. Mark Gay with a legislative sentiment for being named the 2007 Maine Firefighter of the Year by the Maine State Federation of Firefighters.
"Mark has been a firefighter most of his adult life, first as a volunteer and in later years as a full-time firefighter," said Rep. Dawn, D-York, who sponsored the sentiment with co-sponsors Sen. Peter Bowman, D-Kittery, and Rep. Windol Weaver, R-York. "When not fighting fires, Mark volunteers his time and talents at the town, county and state level to all types of firefighter projects and causes. He has twice chaired and hosted the Annual Firefighters State Convention at York Beach."
Gay was surrounded by family and friends during the presentation of the legislative sentiment in Augusta, including Gay's daughters, Stephanie and Meredith, who are York High School students, as well as York Beach Chief David Bridges and York Police Chief Doug Bracy.
Hill described the respect that Gay's colleagues have for him when she said, "Chief David Bridges told me if you looked up ‘firefighter' in the dictionary, you would see a picture of Mark."
Gay has been a member of the York Beach Fire Department for 35 years, with 11 years as a volunteer and 24 years as a full-time professional.
