Bruce S. Johnston

NORTH HAMPTON, N.H. - Bruce S. Johnston, 62, of 220 Lafayette Road, and a former resident of York Harbor, Maine, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, in the Manchester VA Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer.

He was born Jan. 25, 1946, in Middletown, Conn., eldest son of the late Dr. James S. and Lois E. (Hopkins) Johnston. He graduated from Governor Dummer Academy and Wesleyan University. He served in the aviation branch of the U.S. Navy in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War at the Fleet Intelligence Center Pacific Facility at the Naval Air Station Cubi Point, Rep. of Philippines, among other stations.

For most of his life he was involved in commercial and industrial real estate brokerage as well as development, primarily in the Beverly, Mass., and North Shore area. He was a member of the Portsmouth American Legion and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was previously active in Freemasonry, having served his Blue Lodge, Royal Arch Chapter, and was a Past Commander of Boston Commandery #2, KT. He was a 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason and member of the Aleppo Shriners. He was a member and past president of the Warwick Club in Portsmouth, N.H.

Calling hours for Bruce will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, www.lucaseatonfuneralhome.com. His funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, in the funeral home. Burial will be in the First Parish Cemetery, York, in the spring.

Frederick C. Leavitt

YORK BEACH - Frederick C. Leavitt, Ph.D., summer resident of York Beach for the past 60-plus years, passed away Feb. 9, 2008.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ruth and George Leavitt of Albany, N.Y. His father was born in Old Town, Maine.

Survivors are his wife Jeanne, daughter Jacqueline Stafford (Scott) and grandson Eric Stafford and daughter Mary Ann Reed.

Fred was a graduate of Albany Academy and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, with a Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, and received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the State University of New York, Syracuse. He then joined Dow Chemical Co., where he served in many capacities, including director of research for the New England Laboratory, Wayland, Mass., the Halogens Lab, Organic Chemical Lab and Analytical Lab in Midland, Mich., as well as director of Lepitit Pharmaceuticals, Milan, Italy.

Returning to the United States, he was director of government science relations in Washington. D.C. Upon retirement from Dow Chemical, he was executive director of the Council for Chemical Research in Washington, D.C.

A memorial service was held at St. John the Baptist Church, Valatie, N.Y., on Feb. 16. James E. McManus

PALM BEACH, Fla. - James E. (Ted) McManus, 87, of 2850 S. Ocean Blvd., and a longtime summer resident of York Beach, Maine, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, in Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Fla.

He was born Dec. 24, 1920, in Bangor, Maine, son of John J. and Margaret (McTigue) McManus. He graduated from the University of Maine, received a Master's degree from the University of New Hampshire and was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He worked for A & P Tea, Co., for 45 years before retiring in 1985.

He was a member of St. Christopher's Church in York and St. Edward's Church in Palm Beach. He enjoyed gardening and landscaping, researching his Irish family history, sports in general and the Boston Red Sox in particular.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Jennie T. (Christie) McManus; two sons, Timothy J. McManus of North Andover, Mass., and Dr. Michael J. McManus of Auburndale, Wis.; a brother, Dr. Reginald P. McManus of Springfield, Va.; three sisters, Eleanor T. Reilly of Millis, Mass., Mary Thompson of Richmond, Va., and Ann Sage of Natick, Mass., and five grandchildren, Andrew, Patrick, Brendan, Cassie and Paul.

Donald F. Wholey

Donald F. Wholey

YORK BEACH - Donald F. Wholey, 87, of 300 Ridge Road and a longtime resident of Chelmsford, Mass., died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, in York Hospital with his family by his side.

He was born Dec. 18, 1920, in Lowell, Mass., son of John J. and Mae (McNamee) Wholey, and graduated from Keith Academy in 1938. He had worked for New England Telephone Co. for many years before retiring in 1986.

He was a member of St. Christopher's Church and the IBEW Union. He coached Little League baseball in Chelmsford; he was an accomplished vocalist and sang weekly on a local radio station in Lowell, Mass. He was an avid Red Sox fan, a square dancer and he cherished his family.  

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Mary A. (Cobery) Wholey; five sons, D. Timothy Wholey and his wife Joyce of N. Chelmsford, Mass., John J. Wholey and his wife Catherine of Arundel, Thomas F. Wholey and his wife Denise of Manchester, N.H., Brian P. Wholey and his wife Sharon of N. Chelmsford and Daniel J. Wholey and his wife Karen of Fitchburg, Mass.;16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A brother, Rev. John J. Wholey, OMI, and two sisters, Isabelle Doyle and Eileen Hogan, predeceased him.
