YORK - February was filled with good fortune for the streaking Wildcats as they packed the calendar with six straight wins that included a big one over longtime rival Greely; a close one, 3-2 in overtime over Cape Elizabeth, and their final regular season contest, a 3-2 win over Yarmouth at the Travis Roy Arena on Presidents' Day.
A record of 15-4-1 secures the York Wildcats a first-place finish as they head into the playoffs. Cape, Greely, Leavitt and Maranacook will also contend for the crown.
York's blaze of wins began on Feb. 2 and never let up.
While the game at Yarmouth was closer than they might have expected, Wildcat defensemen Nick Richard, Max Leeman, Kal Decato and Dan Powers held the Clippers to just 11 shots in the game. Wildcat goalies Gary Merrill and Andrew Loane shut them down completely in the third period.
Andy Ohlson's quick drive through the slot gave York the first goal, but early in the second, veteran forward Ian McGiln tied the game for the Clippers. On the give and go, Kevin Maran, making perfect use of his poise in deep, hit Powers cutting to the net, and his wrist shot gave the 2-1 lead back to York.
Getting strong support from the bench, York sent three offensive lines to the ice using forwards Corey Decato, Dom Ferrande and Dylan Merritt to bring speed and fresh legs to their attack. Anthony Figlioli and Dillon DellaPasqua, who continue to develop their game, created a flurry of opportunities at Yarmouth's net, but goalie David Bialek, who made 37 saves in the game, held them off.
Monopolizing on York's fourth penalty, the Clippers tied it at 2 on Joey King's shot from the middle, but the Clippers failed on their next five power play attempts. On the short hand, Maran, Jake Posternak, Devin Zucker and David Figlioli kept the puck out of the Clipper's offensive zone.
On York's first power play of the third period, Powers sent the puck across the neutral zone, and Paddy Murphy, on a full run, picked it up and put it in the back of the net for the 3-2 winner.
Playoff brackets for Western Maine will be available next week.
