Leaving aside for another day the arguments for and against the building of a new arts wing at York High School, we take a look instead at the York Budget Committee meeting on March 18 wherein a large turnout of students, parents and educators one after another stepped up to the podium to blast committee member Steve Samborski for public comments he had made at an earlier meeting in which he labeled school music programs as being "catch-basin" education for students who were not capable of more serious academic disciplines. For this, Samborski and his fellow board members were subjected to over an hour's worth of comments from the public, most demanding an apology of some sort from Samborski. Wishful thinking, that.

Those with longer memories of Mr. Samborski's history as a public servant in York cannot be surprised by his most recent unproductive, self-absorbed behavior. It has been his legacy in every public position he has held in this town. To his credit, he did in fact raise his hand to serve, gaining his current seat when he ran unopposed. To his continuing discredit, he has once again misused his public platform to spout off his own poorly reasoned, erratic views while contributing little of merit to the process other than occupying a seat. He will come up for reelection soon enough, and when he does, let's hope that more productive-minded citizens will step forward. It's time for this tired act to go.
