YORK - Rep. Windol Weaver, R-York, recently nominated Seaside Vacation Rentals for the 2008 Gannett Family Business of the Year Award.
The annual award recognizes a family-owned business, owned or operated by two or more members of the same family, which has made exceptional contributions to Maine's economic and community life.
Seaside Vacation Rentals, which Weaver nominated for the small business category, rents homes, apartments and condos weekly and long-term. Owners Maureen Regan and daughter Jennifer Thibodeau have succeeded in making Seaside one of the largest and most successful businesses of its kind in Maine, Weaver noted in a release issued this month, promoting Maine and the southern coast through the years by representation at travel and trade shows in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom.
Weaver has been especially impressed by the contributions Seaside and its employees have made over the years in helping those facing difficult times. They have been active volunteers for the Keep ME Warm program. They also offered their rental properties to families of firemen who were killed during the Sept. 11 attacks in New York, with other community businesses contributing to the effort by filling the fridges, providing activities and much more. This family-run business has always taken a very active part in their communities because they believe in being an integral part of the state and the southern Maine region.
Over the 25-year history of Seaside Vacation Rentals, the Regan family has been helpful to numerous small business startups with mentoring and advice. They have opened their doors to other Maine vacation rental businesses to come and learn Seaside's methods. As well, Seaside has taken their staff to other areas of the country to shadow vacation rental companies to acquire cutting edge business practices.
Submitted applications will be evaluated by a panel based on the success and explanation of family participation, succession planning, communication, business success, work environment and community involvement.
The winners will be celebrated at an award presentation in early June.
