John H. Evans
CAPE NEDDICK - John H. Evans, 68, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, in the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, after a two-and-a-half-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born in Portland on Feb. 25, 1940, to Ben and Eleanore Evans. He attended Limington schools and graduated from Limington Academy in 1958. John graduated from Gorham State Teachers College in 1962, taught one year in Augusta and then taught sixth grade in the Portland public school system for 22 years, first at the Harrison C. Lyseth Elementary school and then at the Lyman Moore Middle School.
He retired from teaching in order to work the increasingly longer tourist seasons in the restaurant business in Ogunquit. He began working on the grill at Johnny's Oarweed Lobster Pound in 1963, eventually becoming a co-owner. He left there in 1985 to own and operate The Lobster Shack. In addition, for a brief time John and good friend Russ Kenney teamed up to open a restaurant on Route 1 called "The Ocean Eagle," but primarily, John was in business in Perkins Cove for well over 40 years.
John was very much an outgoing individual and enjoyed being around and talking to people so much that even when he retired from The Shack, he couldn't stay away from The Cove. He took a summer job working for The Finestkind Cruises as a narrator for their lobster and sightseeing trips; he enjoyed the job so much and his dry Maine wit and sense of humor proved to be so popular with the customers that he continued in that job until his illness made it impossible for him to continue.
He was a devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather and an extremely loyal friend. He enjoyed taking any and all interested persons to his beloved camp at Lily Bay on Moosehead Lake and teaching them the finer points of fishing. Spending time there was a favorite pastime of John's and he never tired of the beauty and serenity of "God's Country." The big fishing trip with the ever-increasing group of friends every May was always a much-anticipated, favorite annual event. Included among other things he enjoyed were working in his yard, boating, spending time with his family and his dog, Squire, and spending the long cold winters in sunny warm Fort Myers, Fla.
John leaves his wife of 39 years, Diana, of Cape Neddick; a son, Jason N. Evans and his wife, April, of Ogunquit; a daughter, Susan E. Canney, and her husband, Michael, of Braintree, Mass.; a sister, Judy M. Young and husband Kenneth of Cape Neddick, and a sister-in-law, Penny Appleby of Turner. He also leaves three precious grandchildren, Tyler and Jillian Evans of Ogunquit and Morgan Canney of Braintree, Mass.; a niece, Kimberly Scott and family of Concord, N.C.; a nephew, Mark E. Young and family of Wells; nephews Paul Harrison and wife of Framingham, Mass., and Stephen Harrison and wife of Alpharetta, Ga., and nieces Kristin Wildsmith and husband of St. Louis, Mo., and Jennifer Ward and family of Stow.
John was predeceased by his parents.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Hospice House as well as the transport team who made the transition there a lot less apprehensive. A very special thank you to the entire staff of the York Hospital Oncology Treatment Center with special gratitude to John's oncologist, Dr. Jonathan Eneman, whose compassionate and caring nature buoyed us all through the last two-and-a-half years.
The funeral service for John was held April 14 in the First Parish Congregational Church with private burial in the First Parish Cemetery. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, www.lucaseatonfuneralhome.com, directed arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, c/o Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 US Route 1 STE 1, Scarborough, ME 04074-9925.
