CLASSES AT HEARTWOOD. Attention art teachers and others: Heartwood College of Art faculty will be on hand to offer an exciting variety of art classes for adults and teens this summer. Teachers can take these classes for continuing education units toward renewal of teaching certification. Each week, from June 23 to Aug. 15, the college will offer four-day workshops in an array of media. Master Gardner Plant Sale will be held May 17. University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteers will be holding their annual Plant Sale at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Office at the Anderson Learning Center at 21 Bradeen St. in Springvale. A large plant sale will include annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, indoor favorites, some trees and shrubs and always a few surprises! A table of gently used items will feature gardening and cook books, plus a few gardening tools that seem to have multiplied over the winter! The Plant-A-Row for the Hungry program will celebrate the 2008 kickoff at this event. Gardeners from York County will be encouraged to plant an extra row to donate to the hungry at a local food pantry or soup kitchen. A raffle offering gardening related items will be held, with proceeds benefiting the Master Gardener Volunteer community programs in York County such as Kids Can Grow, Plant a Row for the Hungry and Garden Angels - helping seniors and people with physical disabilities to continue gardening. USM Seeks Women to Participate in Weight-Loss Study examining the effects of calcium on dieting women led by Associate Professor of Exercise Health and Sports Sciences Janet Whately Blum. Pre-menopausal women between the ages of 21 to 45 who need to lose between 30 to 60 pounds and are not currently dieting or participating in regular exercise are needed for the study. The participants must be nonsmokers in good health who have normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels, are not diabetic and are not lactose intolerant. They also cannot be on birth control, pregnant or lactating. Participants need to be willing to follow a diet for 25 weeks, and attend weekly meetings for the first 12 weeks, then bi-weekly meetings for the next 13 weeks at USM. No exercise will be expected throughout the 25 weeks. This 25-week study has screenings beginning in May, and the weekly meetings starting in June of this year. Women's Health Screening Days will be held to provide eligible women with free mammograms and pap tests at locations throughout York County. The sponsors want to ensure that lack of health insurance or insurance with a high deductible does not prevent women from receiving a pap test and a mammogram. Remaining events will be held in Kennebunk at SMMC's Diagnostic and Therapy Center in Kennebunk on May 14, and Sanford at the Center for Women's Health on May 29. All women preregistering for the Screening Day will be enrolled in the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program (MBCHP). Once enrolled, the women can have a clinical exam and mammogram each year, as long as they continue to meet the income and insurance criteria. Pre-registration is required. Maine Project Learning Tree (PLT) in partnership with The Wells Reserve and Maine Forest Service is offering an educator and community leadership workshop on May 22 and June 5 from 3:45 to 6:45 p.m. each evening at the Wells Reserve on Day one and North Berwick Elementary School on day two. This six-hour workshop will include an introduction to teacher resources at Wells and their outdoor classroom story. Project Learning Tree is an internationally recognized environmental education program. Through hands-on, interdisciplinary activities, PLT provides students in grades PreK-12, with opportunities to investigate environmental issues and encourages them to make informed, responsible decisions.
