YORK COUNTY - The Animal Welfare Society has announced it will be working in collaboration with Mike Doyon to place greyhounds.

Doyon comes to AWS with four years of rescue, handling and placement experience.

"Greyhounds are 45-mile-per-hour couch potatoes," said Doyon. "They are sensitive, intelligent, well-mannered and need no more exercise than any other canine breed."

Shedding little, barking only on occasion and taking a daily walk, greyhounds tend to be an excellent choice for a family dog, he noted.

Known as "racing dogs" because of their speed and chasing instinct, greyhounds compete by the thousands at racetracks throughout the United States. As a result of age, injury or a poor racing record, greyhounds are made available to rescue groups and placement agencies such as AWS.

"I'm excited to work with the Animal Welfare Society in West Kennebunk. It will bring new awareness to the breed, expose the Southern Maine public to greyhounds on a regular basis and allow for even more placement into permanent homes," said Doyon.

Animal Welfare Society Shelter Co-Manager Bobbi Allen is excited about the partnership, too.

"We have a lot of community interest in Greyhounds because they make such wonderful companions," Allen said. "We're happy to be able to help these beautiful dogs find perfect homes in Maine."

Available dogs will be posted on the Animal Welfare Society's website at www.animalwelfaresociety.org.
