OGUNQUIT - Maine State Police have confirmed that two people were killed in a head-on crash on the Maine Turnpike late Monday night, April 28.

Troopers said an SUV heading the wrong was on the turnpike slammed into a car at about 11 p.m.

The crash occurred at Mile 14 on the turnpike in Ogunquit.

Police had received a number of calls of the SUV traveling in the wrong lane and Trooper Philip Alexander caught up with the 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe in the opposite lane and was attempting to get the driver's attention with emergency lights and siren when the crash took place.

Killed in the crash were 65-year-old James McLaughlin of Gorham and 15-year-old Cooper Campbell of Scarborough. Campbell's father, 48-year-old Steven Campbell, was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with non life-threatening injuries.

McLaughlin was driving a 2001 Lincoln Town Car owned by Maine Limousine Services of Portland and had picked up Campbell and his son at Logan Airport in Boston, Mass., and was driving them home.

The driver of the SUV, Donna Bartlett, 38, of Wells survived the crash and was taken to Maine Medical Center with a broken ankle. As of Tuesday evening, no charges had been filed against her, though police said the investigation is continuing.

The northbound lane of the turnpike was closed for more than four hours as troopers investigated the crash Monday night and into the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The York County District Attorney's Office will be consulted before any decision is made on possible charges against Bartlett.
