Article Image MEETING THE PAST. Last week, The York Independent's own Jennifer Saunders, along with her husband, daughter and aunt, took a well-deserved vacation and traveled across the Atlantic to the Azores and Portugal on a trip to connect with Jen's Portuguese heritage. While there, she visited the village of Lombinha da Maia on the Azorean island of Sao Miguel where her ancestors built a small church, Our Lady of Sorrows, in 1901. On her visit to the church, Jen met, by chance, a distant cousin who happened to have come to the neighborhood to visit friends and other relatives. Jen and crew soon found themselves in the midst of an impromptu family reunion - all new fans for the web version of the The York Independent, no doubt! Shown here in front the family church are Jen's aunt, Ruth Ann Santos, along with Jen and her daughter Katie.
