2008 Plant-A-Row for the Hungry program will be kicked-off at the annual York County Master Gardener Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to noon on May 17 at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension York County Office in Springvale. The Annual Public Meeting of the York Ambulance Association will be held May 12 at 7 p.m. at the ambulance building on Salisbury Avenue in York Village. The agenda includes opening remarks and reports from the secretary, treasurer and crew chief. Time for questions and answers with the board of directors will be allotted, and all are welcome to attend.

The Garden Conservancy's Open Days Program features self-guided tours on May 17, June 28, July 26 and Aug. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. of one of York's best private gardens. The garden features formal and informal borders, orchards, ocean views, and collections of various flowering trees and shrubs at Braveboat Harbor Farm, the garden of Calvin and Cynthia Hosmer, 110 Raynes Neck Road, York. The International Women's Club of New England (IWCNE) will hold it's annual craft/antique show is accepting applicants for crafts and antiques through June 1. The show ill be Nov. 8 at York Middle School featuring local artisans, antique dealers, homemade lunch, a bake sale and a raffle. All proceeds benefit charities serving women and children. The Maine Chapter Dream Factory Spaghetti Dinner will be held May 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Norma's Restaurant on Route 1 in York. The price is $6 for adults and $5 for seniors and children, with free admission for those under the age of 5. The Dream Factory is a nonprofit organization that grants the dreams of critically and chronically ill children between the ages of 3 and 18.

Pot Luck Supper and Praise Band Concert at the Ogunquit Baptist Church is a fundraiser for new equipment and music for the Praise Band. The event will be May 30 with the supper at 6 p.m., bring a dish to share, followed by the concert at 7 p.m. A free-will offering will be accepted. Public Supper at the Union Congregational Church in York Beach will be May 22. There will be one seating at 5:30 p.m. and the meal includes casseroles, salads, baked beans, rolls, beverage and pie. In that everyone is seated at the same time, arrival before 5:30 p.m. will be appreciated.

The Ray Angers Community Farm Open House will be May 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 105 Garland Road in West Newfield. Many varieties of perennials and herbs will be for sale, as well as some farm products. There will be live outdoor music in a beautiful location that overlooks Mount Washington. Visitors will be welcome to purchase a barbecue lunch, popcorn and ice cream and tickets for raffles. Children can enjoy face painting or visiting the farm animals. The Ray Angers Community Farm is one of the 24 houses that is owned and operated by York County Shelter Programs and the fundraiser is to support the work of ending homelessness throughout southern Maine. The donation of a 10 x 10 pop-up tent is needed that day at the farm, as well as throughout the summer, so residents can sell their perennials and herbs at farmer's markets. The farm is also looking for a volunteer interested in bringing a pony or a child-friendly horse to provide pony rides for the fundraiser. Donations of items for the raffles will also be greatly appreciated. Visitors who intend to come and relax, listen to the music, and enjoy the view, are asked to bring a lawn chair if possible. Everyone is welcome. If it rains that day, the event will be May 25. First Exhibition of the 2008 Season at the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion Site features 15 master colorists who will exhibit the intense beauty of the rainbow in their paintings and jewelry at the Colorfest Exhibition at the Coolidge Center for the Arts. The Colorfest Exhibition runs through June 15 at the Coolidge Center for the Arts on the grounds of the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion at 375 Little Harbor Road in Portsmouth, N.H. Seacoast Community Chorus "With Heart and Voice" will be held May 18 at 3 p.m. at York's First Parish Church. Every Tuesday evening for the past 37 years, the 60 members of Seacoast Community Chorus, have brought heart and voice together to make music. This spring's concert, aptly titled With Heart and Voice, celebrate 15 years under the direction of Wendell S. Purrington. "Sing into Spring" will be held on May 18 at 7 p.m. Please join us at St. George's Episcopal Church for an evening of music and fellowship. "The Story of a Bad Boy." From May 20 to June 24, Pontine Theatre will offer a community arts project based on research for its original stage adaptation of Thomas Bailey Aldrich's novel, "The Story of a Bad Boy." No experience necessary.  Everyone is welcome, ages 18 to 98. Young people, ages 8 to 17are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Pontine's six-week program of theatre workshops will train community members for a series of public performances at Strawbery Banke Museum and at Pontine's West End Studio Theatre. These performances will commemorate the 1908 opening of the Thomas Bailey Aldrich Memorial, now part of Strawbery Banke Museum. American Cancer Society's Free Summer Camps offer a place where kids who have cancer can join in dozens of fun activities, meet other kids and families and feel more confident about living with cancer. The Cancer Community Center offers a variety of workshops and event. Every Wednesday through May 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. is the free Open Group Networking and support for adults and their families and friends who have or have had any type of cancer. Every Thursday through May 29 from noon to 1 p.m. is the free Mindful Meditation session. On May 27 is the free Melanoma Support Group from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This group combines education and support about melanoma. Also on May 27, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., is the free Gynecological and Breast Cancer Group for women to connect and share resources. The center is a nonprofit community center in South Portland that provides support, information and activities at no charge for adults living with cancer, their families and friends. There is no referral needed and no intake process to take part in the activities and programs we offer. The Wilderness Heals Annual Pledge Hike is one of New England's most challenging all-female fundraising hikes. Join fellow women from July 18 to 20 for a hike through New Hampshire's White Mountains to help raise $125,000 for The Elizabeth Stone House in Boston, Mass. The registration deadline is June 20. The Stone House serves women and their children who have experienced mental illness, domestic violence and substance abuse. Choose from four trail options, including a backcountry option. Three out of the four routes offer hikers overnight accommodations in AMC huts. Each team of four to six women will include an experienced team leader. The fundraising minimum is $1,200. Hiker registration fee is $50. Women's Health Screening Days will be held to provide eligible women with free mammograms and pap tests at locations throughout York County. The sponsors want to ensure that lack of health insurance or insurance with a high deductible does not prevent women from receiving a pap test and a mammogram. Remaining events will be held in Sanford at the Center for Women's Health on May 29. All women preregistering for the Screening Day will be enrolled in the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program (MBCHP). Once enrolled, the women can have a clinical exam and mammogram each year, as long as they continue to meet the income and insurance criteria. Pre-registration is required. WORKSHOPS AND ENRICHMENT

The Appraiser's Network Monthly Breakfast Meeting will be May 21 at 8 a.m. at Norma's Restaurant in York. Maine Project Learning Tree (PLT) in partnership with The Wells Reserve and Maine Forest Service is offering an educator and community leadership workshop on May 22 and June 5 from 3:45 to 6:45 p.m. each evening at the Wells Reserve on Day one and North Berwick Elementary School on day two. This six-hour workshop will include an introduction to teacher resources at Wells and their outdoor classroom story. Project Learning Tree is an internationally recognized environmental education program. Through hands-on, interdisciplinary activities, PLT provides students in grades PreK-12, with opportunities to investigate environmental issues and encourages them to make informed, responsible decisions. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization chartered by Congress in 1939 to assist the United States Coast Guard with all of its missions, excluding law enforcement. SMMC Visiting Nurses Monthly Diabetes Support Groups are held at two locations and are open to all those who live with diabetes as well as family, friends and caregivers. Calendar Raffle to Benefit Melanoma Education Foundation supports skin cancer teacher-training and student materials in New England schools. Each ticket enters 31 drawings, starting July 1. The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group, which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Those who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.
