Article Image PINK TULIP PROJECT. In the center of York Village, there was no question that spring had arrived when hundreds of stunning pink tulips began blooming around the Civil War Monument. What many may not have known about this living symbol, however, is that those flowers were planted to honor all who have struggled with breast cancer, and to promote awareness of the disease. In fact, a total of 900 pink tulips were planted there by the Old York Garden Club to raise funds for breast cancer research. The Old York Garden Club joined forces with The Pink Tulip Fund in its effort to raise money for cancer research and planted 900 tulips at the monument in the fall of 2007. The club plans to do so again this year. The tulips pictured here were in full bloom throughout the month of May. The Garden Club's project raised a total of $1,120, of which 100 percent stays in the state and goes to Maine-based cancer research and patient support programs through the Maine Cancer Foundation.

Article Image REMEMBERING DAVE HILTON. The York County Fire Fighters Association recently held its annual memorial service on the "Big A" - Mount Agamenticus - by the fire tower located there, where York resident and firefighter Dave Hilton spent countless hours keeping watch over the region and helping protect communities from the threat of forest fires and other incidents. The service is held each May in honor of Hilton, who passed away in 2003, and as a way to show appreciation for all the volunteers who have served at the tower. Guest speakers at this year's event were Board of Selectmen Chairman Mike Estes, Gray Fire Chief Ricky Plumber and local firefighters Mark Gay and Ed Walsh. In the days following the service, Estes spoke of Hilton to his fellow members of the Board of Selectmen and the public. "He was a very dedicated fireman in this community," he said, adding that Hilton, "put everything he had into making sure that the towers had been manned for fire prevention."

Jonathan Edwards will be performing a live concert at Jonathan's Restaurant in Ogunquit on June 13 at 8 p.m. The word "legend" is often used to describe veteran folk/rocker Jonathan Edwards, whose 1971 million-selling song "Sunshine" ("Sunshine go away today...") brought him instant fame. He has recorded 15 albums, collaborated with artists like Emmylou Harris and Jimmy Buffett and has performed in theater and commercials as well as doing movie soundtracks, television series narration and record production. His 1987 children's album, "Little Hands," was selected by the National Library Association as a "Notable Children's Recording." Jonathan's Ogunquit started its 2008 concert series this May with John Gorka and Pete Best performances. Jonathan Edwards, who has been a regular performer for Jonathan's Ogunquit's annual concert series - with his charisma charming all those who come to enjoy an evening of live entertainment - will be the first of many concerts to come this summer. Those who wish to dine at Jonathan's will receive preferred seating for the concert, which is held in the Upstairs Ballroom. Tickets and reservations are available on line.
