Tenbroeck "Ten" Cornell

YORK - Tenbroeck "Ten" Cornell, 84, of 36 Witchtrot Road, died Monday, May 26, 2008, at  home following an illness.

He was born April 18, 1924, in Newton, Mass., son of Ward I. and Kate (Simmons) Cornell. He graduated from Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Newton High School, Union College, Tufts University and Middlebury School of French in France.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Core. He taught French at Newton South High School, Berwick Academy and the University of New Hampshire. He was past president of the Salon Francais. He was a member of the Harbor Advisor Committee and one of the original members of the York Ambulance Association. He enjoyed sailing and traveling to France and Bermuda.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Gay (Weaver) Cornell; a son, Ward I. Cornell, and his wife, Anne B. Cornell, of York; a cousin, Jennifer Gibson, of York, two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Ten will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 31. in St. George's Episcopal Church, 407 York St., York Harbor. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, www.lucaseatonfuneralhome.com, is directing arrangements.

Doris F. Curtis

YORK - Doris French Curtis, 82, formerly of St. Augustine, Fla., and most recently of York, died of respiratory failure on May 20, 2008, in Portsmouth Hospital in Portsmouth, N.H.

Mrs. Curtis was born March 30, 1926, in Harrisville, R.I., the daughter of Maude and Harry T. French. Growing up in West Springfield, Mass., she became an excellent swimmer, spending many summers at Salisbury Beach working as a lifeguard. In high school, long before Title IX made sports available to young women, she was invited by Coach Red Silvia to train with the Springfield College men's swim team. She went on to compete as a nationally ranked swimmer for Mary Washington Women's College in Fredericksburg, Va. Mrs. Curtis's love of swimming and the ocean remained a constant throughout her life, and she joyfully passed this on to her family.

Mrs. Curtis earned her undergraduate teaching degree at Westfield State College, and later her Master's degree at Smith College. She taught in the West Springfield and St. Augustine school systems and at Bay Path College, the Smith College Day School and the St. John's County Technical Center. Teaching fourth grade was her favorite, but in her later career she especially enjoyed mentoring new teachers and writing educational grants for innovative projects. She was a member and past president of the St. Augustine Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.  

Mrs. Curtis was predeceased by her first husband, Robert D. French, in 1952, and also by her second husband, Dr. A. Robert Dorsch. Dr. Sprague Curtis, her third husband, died in 2002.

She leaves her daughter, Linda Hegeman, and her husband, Larry, of York; her daughter, Cynthia Pasackow, and her husband, Jay, of South Burlington, Vt., and four grandchildren, Jonathan and Lindsay Hegeman and Kira and Jesse Pasackow.

There will be a gathering in August to celebrate Mrs. Curtis' life and internment will be at the Paucatuck Cemetery in West Springfield, Mass.

Olga R. Hennessey

YORK - Olga R. (Rodrigues) Hennessey, 92, died Saturday, May 10, at Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center in North Berwick.

She was born Jan. 21, 1916, in Cambridge, Mass., the daughter of Manuel and Laura (Silva) Rodrigues. She held positions at the Portuguese Consulate in Boston, Mass., and later in the public school system of Winchester, Mass.

Her husband, Dr. Joseph M. Hennessey, died in 2001.

She leaves a son, Michael J. Hennessey of Boston, Mass.; a daughter, Laura M. Daly and her husband, David J. Daly, of York; a son, Mark E. Hennessey and his partner Roy M. Grundmann of Boston, Mass.; a grandson, Robert Daly, his wife, Jamie Daly, and their son, Mason Daly, of Wakefield, Mass., and a grandson, Ryan Daly of York.

Funeral services were held privately at St. Christopher's Church with burial in the First Parish Cemetery. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home directed arrangements.

 

Marian J. Lacasse

YORK BEACH - Marian J. Lacasse, 81, of 9 Long Beach Ave., died Thursday, May 22, 2008, in Massachusetts General Hospital.

She was born May 29, 1926, in Ypsilanti, Mich., daughter of Ellery M. and Mabel (Clough) Colson. She was a 1944 graduate of Port Huron High School and received an Associate's degree in Business Administration from Husson Business College in Bangor.

Marian had lived in Arlington, Mass., for 13 years before moving to York Beach in 1991. She had wintered in Florida for many years and enjoyed sewing and gardening.

She leaves her husband of 60 years, Peter A. Lacasse; two sons, Peter M. Lacasse and his wife, Linda, of Methuen, Mass., and Alexander D. Lacasse of Nashua, N.H.; twin daughters, Cathy Dove and Carol Lacasse, both of Woodbine, Md.; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A son, Stephen P. Lacasse, and a brother, David M. Colson, predeceased her.
