STAGED READING
"Hideaway," a new play by Michael Kimball, will be feature din a staged reading on June 17 at 7:30 p.m., followed by a discussion. This reading will be presented by the New YORK Theatre Company. Directed by Joi Smith, the play features Maine and New Hampshire actors Dylan Schwartz-Wallach, Whitney Smith, Chris Elliott, Christine Penney and G. Matthew Gaskell. Please note that "Hideaway" is an adult play, with adult language and themes. Seating will be limited.
BROWN BAG LUNCH
"Right Place, Right Time" will be held on Thursday, June 19, at noon. As a part of the summer Brown Bag Lunch series, Norman Abelson, storyteller, memoirist and opinion writer, shares tales from his past. Among Abelson's experiences are attending President Kennedy's funeral, being present on the day of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, marrying a survivor of Auschwitz and living in a family of survivors for 50 years. Presented by the library and the Old York Historical Society.
SUMMER FILM FESTIVAL
On June 22 at 7 p.m., the Summer Film Festival opens with a showing of "Juno," a sardonic but ultimately compassionate story of a pregnant teenage girl who wants to give her baby up for adoption. Choosing a couple from a classified ad, Juno gets drawn further into their lives than she anticipated. This smart and funny movie is warmer and more touching than you might expect. This film is Rated PG-13 for mature thematic material and running time is 96 minutes.
"Michael Clayton" will be shown June 29 at 7 p.m. Attorney Michael Clayton is a 'fixer' whenever his powerful New York law firm wants a mess swept under the rug. But now he's handed a crisis even he may not be able to fix. The firm's top litigator goes from advocate to whistleblower. And the more he tries to undo the damage, the more Michael's up against forces that value corporate survival over human life--even his own. This film is Rated R for language and running time is 119 minutes.
SUMMER PROGRAMS
Bugs are all around us for our summer program, themed "Catch the Reading Bug." Also plan for a swarm of summer programs.
"Creature Features" will be offered on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. including: July 1, "Bug's Life;" July 8, "Bee Movie;" July 22, "Antz;" July 29, "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids;" Aug. 5, "The Love Bug," and Aug. 12, "How to Eat Fried Worms."
"Buggy About Books," a book discussion, will be held July 3 from 10:15 to 11 a.m., on "The Transmogrification of Roscoe Wizzle" by David Elliott. This book stars Roscoe Wizzle, a fourth-grade boy who begins transmogrifying into a giant bug after eating too many meals at Gussy's, a fast-food restaurant rumored to have been built on a polluted site. Join Miss Julie for a discussion of this quirky book and have some interesting snacks. This program is geared for ages 8 to 12. Please preregister by calling the library at 363-2818.

FAMILY FUN SERIES
The Summer Family Fun series, funded in part by a grant from Kennebunk Savings Bank, begins with Michael Parent, storyteller, on July 10 at 10:30 a.m. From New England to New Zealand and many places in between, this internationally acclaimed storyteller has been telling stories and singing songs since 1977. To celebrate our theme, "Catch the Reading Bug," he has prepared a special collection of bug stories and songs to share with listeners of all ages.
Tanglewood Marionettes present "Fairy Circus" on July 25 at 10:30 a.m. Based in New England, Tanglewood Marionettes is a nationally-known touring puppet company. This production features over 20 handcrafted marionettes who will dance, plan instruments, juggle and fly through the air with the greatest of ease! Bring your family to experience the art of fine trick puppetry.
Musician Johnny the K performs Aug. 1 at 10:30 a.m. John Kelleher, star on the national scene, rocks into the library with his 12-string guitar and his collection of hats, masks and disguises. Both a musician and a teacher, Johnny the K is dedicated to celebrating the difference each of us can make in the world.
Tony's Bug Zoo arrives on Aug. 19 at 11:30 a.m. A naturalist from the Maine Discovery Museum will share live samples of the creatures we've been honoring all summer. Where else can you see a giant spitting cockroach?
BOOK SALE
Donations of items in good salable condition are being accepted at the library through July 11. The book sale takes place July 17 to 19.
ENCORE EXHIBIT
"Encore! A Group Art Exhibition" features artists who have shown their work at the library in the past through July 26. More than 30 local artists have had solo exhibitions at the York Public Library since it opened in 2001. These artists have exhibited a wide range of work in a variety of media. For example, Sarah Haskell showed her response to Sept. 11 with "Each One: The Button Project, a 911 Memorial" and invited local firemen and police to her gallery talk; Sculptor Sumner Winebaum exhibited family portraits in bronze for his "Family Resemblances" show, and Beverly Hallam held a ‘mini retrospective' of her work from 1945 to 2003.
IN THE CHILDREN'S ROOM
Our popular weekly story hours have moved to their summer schedule. From June through August, we will have a lapsit program, for ages 2 and under, on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., and a preschool story hour, for ages 3 to 5, on Fridays at 10:30 a.m.
From July 1 to Aug. 6, Miss Kimberly, who usually presents the tactile toddler time, will be at the library for an evening bedtime story time. Come in your pajamas on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and snuggle in for a half hour of stories designed to send you to dreamland.
Weekly programs for children include the Infant Lapsit on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. Join Miss Kathleen for stories, finger plays, songs and rhymes designed to appeal to children from infants to age 2. Preschool Story Times are on Thursdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Thursday story times are geared for slightly older preschoolers than Friday story times. Siblings are always welcome to come to either session. Story hours feature stories, songs, fingerplays, crafts and visits from special puppets. Fridays at 10:30 a.m., for ages 2 and 3, it is Story Time and Crafts with Miss Kathleen.
Monthly programs have ended for the summer. Watch for their return in the fall.
