SCOUTS VISIT BATTLESHIP COVE. York Cub Scout Pack 301 recently made a trip to Battleship Cove in Fall River, Mass., to explore the world's largest collection of historic naval ships. After touring the battleship
Massachusetts, destroyer
Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., submarine
Lionfish, PT Boats 617 and 796 and the Russian missile corvette
Hiddensee, the scouts, their parents and adult leaders spent the night of May 31 on board the famous battleship
Massachusetts. Battleship Cove's Nautical Nights program includes a storyteller, major motion pictures, knot tying and Morse code. The trip enabled the scouts to better understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by veterans of all military branches in all wars. As Ray Bald put it, "This is my fourth trip to Battleship Cove with the Cub Scouts. They always have a great time and learn a lot. They were able to ask questions of a gentleman who actually served on the ship which adds so much to the whole experience." For more about Battleship Cove, visit

STEPPING BACK IN TIME. In what has become a favorite tradition for York Middle School staff and students, and community members alike, the Annual Shakespeare Festival transformed the grounds at York Middle School to an Elizabethan faire on May 29. Sixth-grade students and teachers donned their 16
th-century best for this year's event as the students brought scenes from Shakespeare's great works to life. Performances of excerpts of such famous plays as "Macbeth" were performed in honor of Queen Elizabeth I, portrayed by York's own Gwyneth Wykes, and "The Bard" himself, William Shakespeare, known locally as York Public Library Director Robert Waldman. The event also included the annual pig roast and jousting match. Pictured here, students take part in games that would have been typical of a balmy May afternoon in the latter half of the 1500s.

INCH BY INCH, ROW BY ROW. It is a tradition for third-grade students at Coastal Ridge Elementary School that "Maine Night" be filled with music. Pictured here, the entire third-grade class performs for the students and faculty at Coastal Ridge in preparation for the evening's festivities on May 29. Each third-grade classroom had its own special shirt color, creating a rainbow as the students seen here sing "The Garden Song" to the accompaniment of local musician Stephen Bracciotti while music teacher Karen Littlefield directs the song. That evening, the students performed their concert for family members and also shared the Maine-themed projects they have been working on in their classrooms.
