The people have spoken

Dear Independent,

Hark! Hark! We the people of York have spoken.

So, now many good things will come because we have all spoken out at the polls.

Highland Farm will be saved in perpetuity for our town, conservation, wildlife and environmental protection.

The schools' music building will come for our children.

The energy and environmental design of LEED for buildings will move us forward to a "Green" town.

Let us not bemoan the other side of the coin - the loss of a library position and, of course, the Town Hall. Maybe the library will adopt a volunteer program to assist its needs and the Town Hall will surely find a proper place in time.

Now we should move forward - sell the property behind Coventry Hall to the new owners who will put the property in conservation in perpetuity, enhancing our town's "Green" environment, then put the money where it will increase in value until we have a proposal that will be accepted by our townspeople and we will move into the "Green" - environmental construction under the LEED definition.

Thanks to the people of York for voting, because you have shown you care about our town and its future.

Thanks for voting

Dear Independent,

I write to thank everyone who voted in Tuesday's Primary Election. It was great to be able to meet many of those who took the time to come to the polls.

I especially want to thank those who voted for me in my run for the State House. Having begun my door-to-door campaign, I have had the pleasure of meeting many voters in York. It would be an honor to serve this community as a member of the State Legislature. Thank you.

Candidate for Maine House of Representatives

Auction a success

Dear Independent,

On behalf of the Silent Auction Committee of the Old York Garden Club, I would like to thank all the donors who gave so generously to our auction: Rolling Green Nursery, Green Art, Cranberry Hill Antiques, Coastal Landscape & Garden Center, Backyard Birds & Garden Frills, Mainely Grass, WillowMist Nursery, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and, of course, all the Old York Garden Club members and friends who contribute unique, rare and/or unusual plants for the Silent Auction portion of the annual Old York Garden Club plant sale.

The Silent Auction was a great success, raising almost $1,600 for our scholarship and civic development projects.

Thank you also to the many people who came and supported the garden club through their purchases.

Sincerely,

Bobbie McGann

Silent Auction Chair

Competitive baseball is back at YHS

Dear Independent,

Richard Sirois the current coach of the York High Baseball Team deserves a lot of credit for the team's success this year; however, there is a reason he has such a good talent pool. Baseball is a sport that requires natural talent but it also takes a lot of time and practice to develop that talent.

With this in mind, Gordon Lewis became president of York Little League program a few years ago with the aim of developing the baseball talent pool. A standout catcher and hitter, he played at the University of Massachusetts on a baseball scholarship. Gordon also played at the semi-pro level.

Over a span of five or six years, Gordon tripled the number of teams, started a homerun hitting contest and infused pride and enthusiasm into the program. He also enlisted a group of older former players to help with baseball basics. They were known as Codgers for Kids. Two of the Codgers deserve special praise: Fred Knox and Ellis Lane.

Fred worked with the pitchers. He was uniquely qualified because of his coaching background and long pitching career while in school and with a semi-pro team in the old Boston League.

Ellis was an infielder at various levels including semi-pro and is in the Massachusetts Coaches Hall of Fame.

Hats off to Gordon, Fred, Ellis and the current coaches and players for bringing competitive baseball back to York High School.
