CREATIVE SUMMER FUN AT HEARTWOOD. Children will find a "world" of creative fun at Heartwood College of Art this summer, whether they sign up for "Africa" or "India," or the more familiar topics of "Dogs & Cats" and "Flying Things," children will have plenty of opportunities to exercise their imagination and explore new art media as they create theme-based projects in the college's popular "Heartwood Bound" Program for children ages 9 to 13. Host an International Student for four weeks this summer. Volunteers are needed to open their homes to international students with Educational Homestay Programs (EHP), a nonprofit based in Boston, Mass., which is bringing students fro>m Russia, Taiwan and Hong Kong to the Seacoast area this summer to study English and experience the American way of life. We are currently looking for volunteer host homes for these students, and we'd love for you to get involved! This is a unique and rewarding opportunity for your community to participate in an international exchange, promote language learning and cultivate lifelong friendships around the world. Homestays are July 9 through Aug. 4 and the students will be under the supervision of EF Program staff from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, attending language classes in the morning and participating in a variety of organized educational activities and field trips. A local EF representative will be available 24-7 for questions or concerns. Lunch and Learn on Depression in the Later Years is a free event hosted by SMMC Visiting Nurses specifically designed for persons 65 years of age and older and their guests and caregivers. The Coolidge Center for the Arts introduces its intriguing new exhibition, Bodyworks, at the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion Site. "Doula" is a Greek word referring to a "woman servant," in particular the most important female who attended the lady of the house during childbirth. Over time the word has evolved to mean "woman caregiver." Research has proven that doula support during labor promotes a more satisfying birth experience with fewer medical interventions. Vaughn Island 4-H Environmental Camp, directed by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, is geared toward first-time and experienced campers, with special sessions to introduce younger children, ages 9 to 11, to joys and skills of out door camping on a beautiful island in Cape Porpoise. The program includes camping skills, leadership, recreation, environmental education, and community building. For 38 years Vaughn Island 4-H Camp has been helping youth develop an appreciation of the marine environment, recognizing that they themselves are part of Earth's interconnected web of life. Vaughn Island is a 40-acre stretch of beaches, rocky shore, salt marsh, and oak/pine forest owned and cared for by the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust. Rich tidepools come alive with sea stars, urchins, mussels and an occasional lobster or seal pup. As one of fourteen islands surrounding Cape Porpoise harbor, it is accessible by foot during low tides and by canoe otherwise. Each camping session includes just fourteen campers led by a well-qualified trained staff of two Environmental Educators and two Teen Leaders. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.

Holy Cross Lutheran Church offers new service hours, including the new Saturday evening service, which is informal and the whole service is projected, including song lyrics. The music is joyful, modern and uplifting. Beginning at 5:30 and over by 6:15 p.m., this service includes Holy Communion every week, along with Scripture readings and opportunities for prayer. Two Sunday services with full Lutheran liturgy are held at 8 a.m., with music accompanied by guitar, piano and often a number of other upbeat instrumentalists, and at 9:45 a.m. with organ accompaniment.
